Dashboard contest-and mosaic-complete
Earlier this month, I posted a link to Brian's Dashboard mosaic project. Brian's goal was to collect as many Dashboard screenshots as possible, each featuring a different configuration of widgets. I'm happy to say that many TUAWers answered the call, and the project is now complete. The result is this poster, a mosaic of his Steveness made entirely of the submitted screenshots. Pretty cool. You can download the full sized poster itself. What's more is that Brian is sharing the full collection of 1,160 screenshots he collected. Right now it exists as a 200MB zip folder, but Brian's also looking for additional suggestions on sharing the images.
Nice work, Brian!

russ, it is available as a direct download from the blog right now. I have had a few people mention that they would make a torrent file for me. Just waiting for one to come in.
August 29 2005 at 2:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBTW, MacOSaiX does the job pretty well. in terms of Mac mosaiac progs, mozodojo is alright, with a bit more of a mac-centric interface, but I dont like the final output quite as much...

August 29 2005 at 1:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks John. Some people have been writing me asking if they would get in trouble if they made a mosaic with the screenshots. I assured them it would be ok.

While it's true that Robert Silvers does have several patents regarding photomosaics, it's not widely known if they will hold up to a legal challenge against them. It is very easy to find prior art (Kodak used photomosaics in widely-broadcast television and print ad campaigns in the early 90's) and if you take the concept in a more general sense, the general idea of how a photomosaic works goes back as far as impressionist painting or arguably even ancient ceramic or glass tile mosaics. There are probably 20-30 (maybe more) commercial photomosaic software packages on the market. I would place bets that few if any of them license patents from Robert Silvers company. Please note that I am not trying to discount Robert Silvers work or his desire to patent his methods for generating mosaics; I just believe that he has a very weak hold on the whole concept of a photo mosaic.
