Photon Open Sourced

PhotonPhoton, a great iPhoto plugin I wrote about a few months ago, has now gone open source. It is being released under the GNU Lesser General Public License, which basically allows you to modify and redistribute the code but not to charge for it. Sounds fair to me.

Photon is a fantastic plugin, and I hope that this open sourcing will make it even better.

Yep, Photon is a nice plugin, but with some limitations in its current version (i.e., only one picture per post, no possibility to link the thumbnail to the real picture, etc.). However, thanks to the availability of the source, I was able to hack it in less than 5 minutes (to solve the second problem; the first is still a little bit difficult without changing the structure of the export).

Is this any better than using the Flickr export plugin, then using Flickr to blog?

the GLPL says nothing about how much you can charge for distributing the software (you could take Photon and charge people $1,000,000 for downloading it from you if you wanted). It's all about not being able to restrict what people DO with Photon. The big perk, AFAIK, with the GLPL is that I can take that work and redistribute it with my non-GPL code as long as its still a static library, and I provide the source for it. GPL isn't free as-in price, it free as-in freedom.

Scott, this is a fabulous plugin. I appreciate the ability to post to several different blog types as I have family spread all over the country and each is using a different platform, i.e., wordpress, typepad. I'm the family geek, so I get everyone sending me the photo's to upload to their blog... along with the required "hey, I love you bro" etc.. Thanks Scott. This is fantastic!
