Gmail Notifier for OS X
It looks like Google is showing us Mac users some love after the whole GTalk client thing. Gmail Notifier, which was Windows only, is now available for Mac OS 10.3.8 and later (including Tiger).
What is Gmail Notifier? Much like Gcount, GmailStatus, and Gpeek, it is a simple program that lets you know when you have email in your Gmail account by displaying the icon on the left in your menu bar. Thanks for the tip, Ferjan.
More exciting pictures from the install after the jump.
When you download Gmail Notifier you will find a little Google disk image on your desktop (or wherever you happen to download things to). The custom icon for the disk image is a nice touch, and perhaps it is why it took Google so long to port this to the Mac.That's a joke, folks, just in case someone thought I was serious.
You double click the icon, get the normal "Drag me to your applications folder to install," and then double click the application icon to start. You are greeted with this dialogue box:

Enter your Gmail address, your password and then click OK. That's it, it is now running in your menu bar. If you click on the menubar item you get this drop down:

The preferences:

And that's about it.

I love the Gmail notifier. I have paid to have other notifiers and they work for a while and then go wrong. Infact MailHere lasted two weeks and then charged me again!!!

I know there are plenty of other apps available, and they may be better than the one provided by Google. Even so, this announcement is good news on two fronts: 1. It shows Google has not completely abondoned Mac development (as mentioned.) 2. The official notifier will probably be linked to extensively from within Gmail, making the larger Mac community aware that it exists. Not all Mac users, though I wish it was the case, read this weblog, and that's where I found out about Gee, and others.

September 01 2005 at 4:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat is a major problem. Also, why waste valuable toolbar real estate when I use very few widgets, GPeek all the way! PS I would love google earth mac. pps ichat doese the job for me.
August 31 2005 at 6:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't now why in the world anyone would want a google talk client for the Mac when Adium already speaks jabber and is by far the best IM client for OS X, with the major exception that it doesn't do audio/video chatting.
August 31 2005 at 4:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy release Gmail Notifier as a widget? I actually tried using this before reading the tuaw.com article and I thought the widget was not working as the front side didn't do anything after I entered my info on the backside. It seems to me this is NOT what most users expect of a widget.
August 31 2005 at 4:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPretty useless since I leave Apple's Mail on 24/7 for my GMail. This one is only useful if you have a secondary Gmail account you wanna check.
August 31 2005 at 4:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks google, but seriously, do we really need this? I mean if I already am sitting at my own computer, I have gmail set up in mail.app, so no need for a notifier tool... How about Google earth for OS X?
August 31 2005 at 2:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI use Gmail's RSS-feed and NetNewsWire as my Notifyer. Works like a charm.
