How Droxy would change Garageband
Ryan Saghir over at our sister (or is it brother, I can never tell the sex of blogs) blog Droxy, has a great post about improvements that would make Garageband the podcasting creation tool. Interestingly enough first on the list is making a PC compatible version of Garageband.Garageband would be a great success on the PC, I have no doubt about that, and it would make Apple lots of money (remember iLife isn't free anymore), however, would it be the right thing for Apple to do? I'm not sold on it but something tells me that there aren't many people buying Macs just for Garageband. However, if Apple does incorporate the changes that Ryan suggests I can see the Mac mini being marketed as the Podcasters' dream studio and that would be smart.
What would you change about Garageband?

OK i have had some eperience from school with iMacs, particularly GrageBand and iMovie (or whatever its called) and I have to admit, I really don't like them. I would absolutely love it ifa Windows version of GarageBand was released, I have been looking for a long time. That would just make my day! - Matt

GB uses system level libraries and frameworks that just dont work the same way in Windows. Second of all, GB only recognizes AudioUnits plugins which are Mac OSX only as well. PC users would want VST plugin compatibility which would either create a major schism (thus destroying cross platform compatibility) or would require Apple to build VST support in the OSX version which is doubtful since they want to promote their in house AU standard. Anyone who enjoys using GarageBand should check http://www.macjams.com which has a very active user base discussing things like this as well as being a great place to share your creations & check out other people's for free.

You'd still get Garageband for free with a Mac purchase whereas you'd have to buy Garageband on Windows each time it was updated. Putting Apple apps on Windows just shows Windows users how much better the Mac experience is and stealthly convinces them to take a look at the Mac platform the next time they buy a new computer (plus, it would kill sales of Sony's Acid). I mean, arguing against a Windows port of Garageband is like arguing that a Windows port of iTunes would hurt Mac sales. I think we know better than that. Just as porting iPhoto to Windows would be smart if Apple decides to re-enter the digital camera market. Hell, I wish Apple would port Safari to Windows and include it with iTunes for Windows. By stealth and very quickly, Apple would destroy the Internet Explorer vicegrip on web browsing, at least amongst the consumer market.

August 31 2005 at 10:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAdd me to the camp of people who dropped Windows and bought a Mac for GarageBand. It was by far the #1 attraction. Everything else has been icing on the cake. Obviously I love it: I just bought an iBook to supplement my iMac G5. Apple is definitely making their money off of me. I would echo Dave's comments. Printing sheet music would be great. Also, as a singer first and a pianist second, I would certainly like more robust music-editing functionality. There are pieces of music that I have that I simply am not skilled enough to play and it would be nice to be able to easily program a passage. I know there are programs that can do this --Finale maybe? -- but I'd like to just use GarageBand. Also, there are some key instruments missing (amazingly). The Orchestra add-on pack is nice, but I was hoping for more solo string instruments. Certainly a solo cello would be nice.

I'd like to select the instrument I want, pop a sheet of blank staff paper in my printer and print it's part in perfect notation. If I'm working on some music, and then when I get together with the band I can just hand the guitarist, the bassist, the drummer, etc. their parts. . . well that'd be fantastic.
August 31 2005 at 9:24 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk, I didn't buy a Mac just for GarageBand, but the iLife suite was a big factor in my decision to go Mac. iLife is a major draw for the consumer market, and I think it would be a mistake for Apple to release it on Windows.
August 31 2005 at 9:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI also bought my Mac partly due to GarageBand. I was unsure about switching, but when they demoed GarageBand for me at the Apple Store, that was enough to push me accross the rubicon to buy my PowerBook. What would I add? For 3.0, more (and more robust) plugins out of the box, native Midi out, a standard drum-machine-esque sequencer in addition to the current piano roll, optimized audio engine (GarageBand is slower than it needs to be), maybe a mixer screen for fine tuning, and finally continued compatability with 10.3.x... If I have to get Tiger just to use iLife '06, I'll just buy Logic Express instead!
August 31 2005 at 9:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replysomething tells me that there aren't many people buying Macs just for Garageband. Actually, I did just that! Well, yeah, there were a few other reasons, but I wanted GB as a quick simple cheap home recording solution.
