Bursting the bubble: Will the iTunes phone disappoint?
Forbes speculates that the anticipated Sept. 7 announcement of an Apple/Motorola iTunes phone may be disappointing. According to Forbes, an unidentified source who has seen the phone has reported that it is designed for just 25 songs. The rumor is that the phone's software will cap the number of songs that can be stored at 25, regardless of the size of the memory card. Maybe I'll just stick with good old-fashioned CDs.

With the amount of hype over this thing, it's gonna disappoint even if it could play music, translate all known languages and dialects and cook your dinner.
Call me a cynic, but it is going to be a pretty standard phone with a standard music player that just happens to have an interface designed by Apple. I don't think it's gonna be up to much, but I already have a very good phone, and an iPod.
Just my 2c.

it's made by Motorola: it cannot *fail* to disappoint. Strictly in term of user interface and elegance, in the mobile phone world Nokia are Apple, Sony-Ericsson are Microsoft and Motorola are some shonky linux distribution. Their interfaces are appalling. And so is their shit iTap texting system.

Plus, there's the fact that it's a Motorola. Not to slag off Motorola, but I was actually pretty excited about the new phone when I first heard about it. But unfortunately, I have this problem. You see, I'm frankly unable to use any mobile that isn't made by Nokia. I simply can't handle it. It's a terrible affliction.
So hey, even if it came with a kitchen sink the size of a Compact Flash card, I still wouldn't buy it.

I'll go out on a limb and predict the phone will be a delight. Apple wouldn't let so important a product introduction be bungled with a half-baked product. It's my hope that Apple's design team, arguably the best and most successful such team anywhere, will have put the entire offering together, including the phone's txt messaging, contacts, web browser, and so on.
We'll see... And I hope I'm right, because I'll be signing up for Cingular immediately if I am, for sure.

Looks like it might hold up to 240 songs:

I'm really hoping that the introduction will not be for the iTunes phone, even though I love my iPod - CDs are so pass?;) I think an iTunes phone, as a real product, will fall on its face, just as I did when I walked into my first grade classroom on my very first day of school.
Please, Uncle Steve, announce anything else on September 7, just not an iTunes Phone!

everything has pretty much been said already. I'm not a fan of Moto (it's SonyEricsson or Symbian-based Nokia phones for me1), and my gut feeling tells me this is going to be a major let-down (even more so than waiting for Spymac 4 to launch on the 1st of September).
But then again, it's hard to imagine apple associating itself with a really shoddy product.

I'm with the consensus here, I just can't see how an iTunes Phone will attract...
However in the US not as many people use mobile phones as in Europe or Japan, so maybe it will be a big hit here in Europe and Japan and Apple are not that bothered (maybe a little) about the impact in the USA.

Didn't the invite alude to the iPod with 1000 songs in your pocket? I can hardly believe they would have an 'event' for a phone that holds 25 songs.
This is Apple we're talking about here, not...some other company.

You can play CDs on your phone? Cool...you must have crazy wide pockets.
I modified my phone to play all of those 45's that you fools have been hocking on ebay. 50 Million Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong.
Wait, gotta wind it back up.

Hey peeps,
Regardless of the 'iPhone's success or failure, I think I have a general ill feeling about playing music on a phone. Sure, I have a phone that has all the basic features plus a camera and it can play some tunes (Nokia 6630), but I don't use the camera or the music capability, I have several real cameras and an iPod to do that kind of stuff.
I long for a phone that didn't pretend to be something else, just to make/receive calls, send/receive sms and sync address data but be really good at it :-) The last phone I was really happy with was a Nokia 6210.
Cheers;
Poncho

Uhm, just a reminder, haven't you folks read the specs for the Nokia N91? 2 megapixels, Wi-Fi, 3G and Tri-Band and 4 GB of storage for i.e. music?

I have a motorola phone - razr and i think it is a great phone but only because it is small and well looks cool! All i use it for is calling and texting with the occasional reminder. I dont think you should condemn it because it is motorola!
I personally think that it is not a good idea to pad out a phone with useless features like camera and mp3 players but instead make an ultra cool looking phone that has basic functionality for a low cost. When i say cool looking really what i mean is something that i can put into my pocket and for it to fit and not leave a massive bulge causing my trousers to bulge and distort.
With the whole semiconductor and making everything small i would expect a phone the size of my finger nail but instead half the phones i see these days seem to be going back to the size of early phones!

Initial reports say the new iTunes phone will only be able to carry 25-100 songs, to prevent Apple from cannibalizing its iPod market. But there may be hope, rumors are circulating that Apple may announce a MNVO move making it a player in the wireless industry.
