Playlist's Hands-on Review of the iPod nano

ipod nano hands-onI'm very jealous of Christopher Breen over at Playlist right now. He managed to get his hands on exactly the iPod nano I want (but will not splurge for): the 2GB4GB black one. It's a good first hands-on review, noting a few of the things that some of us may have wondered about: "...you'll find no TV Out commands in its Slideshow Settings window because it can't project pictures to an attached television. Also, it doesn't work with Apple's iPod Camera Connector or Belkin's Media Reader, which means you can't upload pictures to it. And although the Diagnostic Screen shows a LineIn test, current iPod microphones require a connection to the Remote Control port as well, which is missing on the nano."

Also, it looks like the black iPod nano comes with the same white earbuds. Dumb! The lanyard is currently only offered in white, too. I hope Apple rectifies this and gives us matching black peripherals.

One cool thing that I wasn't expecting: the iPod nano comes with a little dock adapter so that you can slip the nano into any existing dock you may already own. Nice.

Great review! In looking at the picture that Christopher Breen included with his review, I couldn't help but notice how the black "nano" seems to show surface dust and particles more than the white "nano" would. I'm going with the white "nano".

OHHHH... so you have to buy the nano dock anyway, eh? The other way around seemed plausible, cause when I clicked the accessories link on Apple's page and checked out the dock for the nano, it sent me to a page that said "iPod mini dock". I wonder, will they offer an adapter for current 4G iPods? Or am I destined to have two docks on my desk (and two USB ports consumed)? Thank you very much for the info, DF!

Clarification: The Dock Adapter doesn't let you use the nano with existing dock-cradle products (well, it may, but only by chance). Rather, Apple appears to be encouraging vendors to make future products with a "universal" dock base, and then Apple will include the appropriate adapter with each new iPod model -- in other words, vendors won't have to worry about having to make new cradle adapters for every new iPod, and customers won't have to wait for such adapters to use their new iPods with their current accessories. Alas, the Dock Adapter doesn't really work with existing products.

"You say any dock, but what if I've got a firewire only dock?" I thought that the cable determined the docks orientation, not the dock itself. But not having it work on FireWire is a big WTF in my book. It's the whole reason I got Monty - the FW port for my mini. Looks like my next upgrade will either be a Mac mini, Emac, or a full sized iPod.

A dock adapter? Very cool! My 40GB 4G might be getting a little brother soon...

Apple have been very clever (as they usually are) with the two colour release for the latest "must have" gadget. They released two colours which will sell equally well but it also pretty much forces Apple resellers to buy twice as much stock to keep up with demand, especially in the upcoming holiday season. This is a very easy way to increase their sales and in turn lower their buy price on flash memory which leads to higher margins for Apple in the beginning, and lower prices for the consumer later.
