I don't want an iTunes phone
I may eat these words, but I really don't want an iTunes phone, and I don't want my kids to have one either. No, I'm not that old, nor that grumpy. I just got a chance to sit down and take in the entire QuickTime webcast of yesterday's announcement of the iTunes phone. When I got to the part where Cingular, the exclusive carrier for the iTunes phone, proudly shows off its upcoming TV ads, I found myself cringing. One ad features a young guy walking along with music playing in his ears, fantasizing about dancing to the music, oblivious to the real world around him. When his phone rings, the music pauses for just a second -- just long enough for him to blurt out an abbreviated response -- and then it's back to the music and living in his head. Sorry, but this isn't my view of utopia. I have no desire to be plugged into a music player and a telephone all day long. I'd rather have all my senses tuned into the real world. So call me a throwback. I can take it.

I could care less about an itunes phone! What I want to know is, when are we going to be able to buy any phone we want and use it where ever we want? If Mac came out with a Mac designed phone with an OS X interface that was cool, small and integrated with my home computer, laptop, etc. I would buy it right now. Until then I'm not switching from T-mobile to Cingular just to hear music. I hope Job's wasn't the brainiac who thought this one up.

They are all a compromise any how, it is just a shame when the chance is given that it has to turn out so WRONG oh God so Wrong and how simple to make most folks happy-VERY. I do not believe designing a 'phone can go so out of square, but wow it happened.

To paraphrase Futurama, my head has better resolution than the real world." Actually I am further along than most. I spend my time editing for broadcast tv and spend up to 12 to 16 hours a day n front of the mac. Everytime I get a chance to see the outside or appreciate music; I am there.

September 09 2005 at 1:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think this whole convergence thing is going a little far. I was talking to my dad about this at the bar tonight and I decided that I'll take a phone/iPod combo when I can have around 4GB of space to keep my stuff. As it is I love having my 27+GB of music with me, but to get to one device for music and a phone I could probably pare down my listening selection to 4GB. So, there it is. I'll buy one when they get to that point. Besides, by that time I'll be done w/ my 2-year contract and can upgrade w/o signing a new contract.

But every day when my RSS refresh and I see something from TUAW I wonder if it's even worth looking at... Please do more news reporting instead of opinion posting, it's really killing this site... If you want to bash something, bash Microsoft, I'm ok with that... sB
