Report: Black nano outselling white
According to a report at iPod Garage, iPod nano sales are taking off, even this early in the game. The black 4GB iPod nano has jumped to the #4 position on Amazon already, and the 4GB white model is at #22. While the black 4GB nano is doing better than its white counterpart, both 4GB models are really blowing away their 2GB siblings. The black and white 2GB models are at # 120 and #288 at Amazon, respectively. It looks like, for the early adopters at least, the black 4GB model is the nano to have. It's definitely the one I want. I've even got a name picked out: Mini Vader.
So, will you buy a nano, which model will you choose and what will its name be?

Do people think the black nano in 4GB will sell out like the mini did. I can't buy one for a week or two and I want to be able to get one when I do....

I am getting a nano, and it is going to be a black 4 gig. I could not live with 2 gigs, and the black is most definitely better looking. As for a name, I would have to give it a lot of thought. I am currently thinking about 10^-9... or maybe Sirius Black... I have no clue right now. More thought, more thought.

My 4 GB black nano is rocking my world already. And Steve was right in the keynote.. it really does look damn cool.
One interesting bit: stuff like contacts and pictures load a heckuva lot faster on the nano than on the 60 GB iPod photo I used to have. Me thinks because there's no hard drive to wait for spinning up and down, not to mention improved seek times on flash memory.

Has anyone mentioned what a great deal the 4gb nano is? CNET's calling it 'pricey', but I did a quick look around the net and couldn't find a 4gb compact flash card (non-microdrive) for under $220. Now Apple has a 4gb, color, flash-based, photo iPod for $249! That's an awesome deal and nobody seems to be talking about it.
4gb is plenty of space. I've been using my 1g 5gb since the month it was released and never felt the need to upgrade because of space. It's big though, and the design on the nano is so freakin' nice, I'm probably going to get a black one. Sure, you can get 5x the storage for only $50 more, but it's so small!!!

My black one is on the way. I'm super excited for it, it's going to be my Shuffles big bro. The name? I don't know yet, but Jack doesn't sound so bad :)

I just updated my website with a fun little look at the new nano. I figured all you TUAWers would enjoy it.

Nope. I bought a mauve (it's not pink enough) iPod Mini less than a year ago. And I named it Wednesday...to go with my oversized PC, Lurch.
I suppose if I did get a nano, it would be black and I'd name it Mork.

I'm hoping to wrangle a black nano as a Christmas gift. She will be named North Star, I think.

To paraphrase Spinal Tap
"It's like how much blacker could this [iPod nano] get? And the answer is none, none more black"
That would be a great TV ad.

I'd like a black one, but I'd like to be 100% certain that the earphones, etc are black. I don't think they should be white - I know it's iPod's signature, but they really should match.

Makes sense that the 2Gb isn't selling so great: for 40 more (UK price: is it $50 in the US?) you get twice the capacity with, according to the specs on the Apple Store website, no increase in size or weight (I assume those 2Gb chips have negligible weight then).
Unless you just don't have the extra cash, hard not to go for the 4Gb.

At present Xenedar the earphones are white, I think, but this could soon change. TUAW linked to a Playlist article on this post http://www.tuaw.com/2005/09/07/playlists-hands-on-review-of-the-ipod-nano/ mentioning the issue.
I just might buy myself a nano in the next couple of weeks. Since I don't own an iPod yet, I might just go for the 2GB "signature" white model, since it now seems to be the underdog, too. My Mac mini is called Eleanor, so maybe I'd call the nano Penny Lane.
Just a thought, but if black continues to outsell white, do you think that the iPod 5G or video Ipod lines might include black models, too? I know the U2 one is already, but the red click wheel looks ugly to me, and I don't particularly crave Bono's engraved signature.

Well, in spanish countries, "Nano" is a usual short name for "Fernando", so I guess there's loads of Fernandos which are very happy with the name of this blighty new iPod.
When the heck are they gonna release the iPod Richie?

Black looks really really cool and shiny. However, just like the PSP (Playstation Portable) it will attract finger prints like mad! You will most likely find yourself constantly buffing the black surface with a microfibre cloth! If you don't constantly clean it, it will look oily and smudged with finger prints.
The white one doesn't show the smudges as bad. I know people who constantly buff the stainless steel back of the iPods as it too shows fingerprints. How much more for a shiny black iPod?
Also some have said they would love a shiny black PowerBook but same issue, it's going to collect fingerprints and palm marks and really show off the salt residue from sweaty hands! It's bad enough, I have to polish my Aluminum PowerBook all the time. Black would be much worse.
Just a thought to consider....
