Video iPod-ready iTunes
TUAW reader Mike writes that under iTunes 5:If you try syncing videocasts to your iPod via iTunes5, it tells you that your 'particular model' of iPod is incapable of playing video.
A hint of things to come? Probably. Don't hold your breath, though. There's been an OGG icon lurking in there since 4.5, and still no love.

I'm not sure if this means anything either, but the windows installer for iTunes 5 also includes and installs QuickTime 7 - the previous installers did not.

Yeah, I saw that too, and I didn't notice it in any releases of 4. So, who knows, Paris is just round the corner...

Nope, nothing new either, it's always installed both iTunes + Quicktime

To be honest, I don't see the allure of watching poorly-produced video on such a small screen anyway.

winkyeah:
A video iPod would have to have a bigger screen...something on the order of the PSP. With the Nano, though, they've proven they can shrink the internals enough to make room for a bigger LCD, and maybe some other ports, like S-video out.

I think it's more of the allure of being able to plug your ipod into a tv, bring personal videos to the family, store your favorite movies without DVD's, that I'd love.

First: thanks for running this. ;)
Second: By the time Apple gets 20-30GB sticks of RAM at a low enough cost to produce a video pod with internals shrunk small enough to accommodate the battery and screen in the way in which you suggest I think I'll be about 50.
The 'vPod' would likely be larger than the current 60GB iPods and smaller than the 12" iBooks. I'm still waiting for the Apple tablet style device with a built in DVD drive and hard disk. IMHO that would be much smarter than video on a device with the current iPod form factor and a larger screen.

Add this fuel to your burning speculation. In the iTunes 5 AppleScript Dictionary, the "special kinds" property of a playlist includes the new "folder" kind and also..."Video".

If the current iPod had a firmware upgrade that allowed me to stor movies on it, and play them back on a TV, I would be a very happy camper. That way, I can take my music video's with me where ever I go. (As long as there is a TV where I'm going)

Personally, I don't see why everyone is so damned interested in a viPod. The beauty of my iPod is that I can catch up on the news, listen to Geek Speak Radio, or rock out to my tunes on the go. I know some of you are public transit frequenters (esp. in the NE) and so you don't need to be able to concentrate on driving so you can watch video. I like to just chill and listen. Watching takes too much effort and listening can get you the information almost by osmosis. Especially when I am walking across campus or elsewhere in town, video would be completely superfluous!

Wow just wow..... I want a 20-30GB stick of ram to stick into my 1,21 jigowatts computer (with flux capacitor)
Back to subject, I would love a video Ipod. I just hope they come out with it faster..... because that creative zen vision is starting to look real nice.
