iTunes works with mobile phone(s)?

Anyone else see this in Software Update? If so, has anyone else noticed the wording they use in the details for this update?
itunes mobile phones
"iTunes 4.9 or later features the ability to transfer music to mobile phones. This driver is required for iTunes to communicate with these supported mobile phones."

While opinions are surfacing, such as one at Slashdot, that the ROKR phone is more of an important failure right now than anything, I'm sure devices like the ROKR show that convergence like this is just the beginning, and it seems as though this driver description points to the same conclusion.

Either way, I've also heard reports that people are having trouble getting iTunes 5 to recognize the ROKR phone, so I'd assume this driver update is meant to spearhead those complications. Would any TUAW readers with a ROKR like to confirm these issues or the driver's ability to fix them?

I think the ROKR is just a pilot program just to get the iTunes cell phone UI client out there, to show off to other cell phone providers/makers, and to get it right. I bet we see other iTunes enabled cell phones within a year.

I wonder if Apple will stay exclusive to Motorola, though. Typically when they partner with a third-party for their products, they like to stick with them; but will this be the same in the cell-phone market?

This driver is only for the phones which has the iTunes client running. Back when the beta firmware of the Rokr floating around, I wasn't able to sync it with my powerbook at all (the Rokr doesn't sync with iTunes 5 without this either, as someone mentioned at HoFo). After this update, my E398 flashed with Rokr firmware was able to open iTunes when phone is connected to the computer (it shows "DO NOT DISCONNECT" but no syncing still. So I'll guess this is only for the people with the Rokr final firmware.

On the ROKR phone the iTunes application is just a j2me app that's integrated into the phone's software. It would be fairly easy for another phone manufacture to install the app and support itunes. I would not be surprised to see a bunch more itunes enabled phones in the next couple years.

Yea, it seems the iTunes phone is still having issues. That software doesn't seem to do anything. Does it? I guess it's in how you interpret the message. I was waiting to see a list of supported phones.
