Carry a bootable OS on your iPod nano

If you like Linux and you like the iPod nano, then why not slap a copy of Slax on your nano and have a full OS with you wherever you go. Slax lets you run Linux directly from a CD / USB flash drive without installing anything on the computer you boot off of it. Better yet, jakemikey has written a thorough how-to walking you through the steps necessary to get Slax running smoothly on your iPod nano.

Who needs a cross-platform browser when you can have a fully portable OS?

Jacob, Follow this link. http://engadget.com/entry/8817137592535661/ It does mention on there that you have to erase the iPod but I got away without doing it. This method allowed me to install Tiger from a .dmg file without burning to DVD as I don't have a superdrive. Be warned though, this will shorten your iPod's hard drive life dramatically if you are running the OS off the iPod for long periods of time.

But I want the iPod to be an iPod with my music on it still too!! Not just a device to boot Linux from. Wouldn't a external HD be a cheaper method of doing this?

I read somewhere that you can't boot OS X off the nano like you can with HD-based iPods.

I think it's worth mentioning that (at least according to the Slax website) this will only work on a PC.

Ubuntu also has a "live disk" version, and is nice if you prefer a Debian-based Linux. http://www.ubuntu.com/ http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/

You can run OS X off your iPod too. Not recommended for a hard drive based iPod unless you want a short life out of it. The Nano is a much better option.
