Jobs gives a date for Intel Macs
Warm up those credit cards for June 2006, early adopters. Another little nugget to come from Steve-O's quiet little meeting with reporters at the Apple Expo in Paris: the shipping date for the first Intel-based Macs. Hey, you know what else was released in June, not too long ago? Way back in 2003 the G5 PowerMac's arrived in that sweltering month... Get it, hot chips, hot month? Anyway, the speculation still abounds as to exactly which Mac will get the Intel treatment first. About the only thing everyone agrees on is the the eMac probably won't get Intelized first. Which means Steve will announce Intel-based eMacs in January.[Via Engadget]

I suspect powerbooks will get intel inside first since they have received the least amount of substancial updating in the longest period. The thought of new Centrino powerbooks make me giddy...

I swear they said the mac mini would be the first to get the intel chips with the iBook and PowerBooks coming after that, and the PowerMac G5's and iMac G5's would be the last to get intel chips... squeeze the emac in there anywhere you please, unless they kill it for a mac mini that will cost 399.99 and come with a monitor... Cheaper chips, cheaper computers, you know how it is...

Yeah, I reakon the PowerBook has gonna be one of the first to go Intel. They've been stuck in a rut for too long now. Then maybe the Mac Mini, iBook, iMac & PowerMac. eMac has got to be one of the last, hardly high on the agenda me thinks.

I believe either cnet or the WSJ said it, and people have been spreading it around like gospel truth. So far all Apple has said is the first Intel Macs will be shipping by June '06 when the next WWDC happens, and the transition will be complete by the end of '07. My money is on Intel PowerBooks or PowerMacs being announced at WWDC '06. eMacs and iBooks being released before the '06 school year. xServes I think are coming in '07 and I have no idea about the mini or the iMac. This is all of course based on sources that I just made up.

Though of course at the time, Intel denied that it was in fact a Mac mini clone. Not tht it matters now, since they'll be getting inside the original soon enough.
I personally think the laptop models would be first to get Intel inside, then the mini (and I agree that pitting a Celeron or low-end Pentium M in there would bring the price down enough for it to replace the eMac as a bundle), followed by the Power Macs (will they retain that name, I wonder?)

If the mini gets the Intel chips first, wouldn't that make it faster than the Power Macs with PowerPC?
My guess is they'll update the whole line in one fell swoop in a typical piece of Jobs marketing flourish.

I think you misread Jobs. You are quoting Engadget which says that Jobs says the first Intel Mac will ship in June. But the source that they quote says BY June. Those might be the same thing but Jobs did not say he would not ship it before June. He just said they would not be late. He promised by June and they will ship by June. Those might mean exactly the same thing... or...
