Security Update 2005-008
There's a new Security Update in the queue if you run Software Update: Security Update 2005-008, which is supposed to include: ImageIO, LibSystem, Mail, QuickDraw, Ruby, SecurityAgent and securityd. More info found here.A word of warning, though: Security Updates have been . . . problematic in the past for some people, and one of our readers, Sean, writes in with this warning about this update: "Got home today and saw a Security Update in Software Update. Went through it, told me to restart, and I did. When I logged in after the reboot, it asked me for my Keychain password for "System". I entered it, and it told me I was wrong. Tried again, same thing. Tried again, and now I've entered the "wrong" one too many times. I guess this update makes my system so secure that it is unusable :) Might want to warn TUAW users to hold off on the update, if this happens to anyone else."
Thanks, Sean, and good luck! UPDATE: Well, it worked fine for me and several other users in the comments. Also, there's an iPod updater too.

Well, I plan to reinstall the system this weekend anyway, so if it messes things up I won't have to make special plans to fix it!

Just installed it, and there doesn't seem to be any trouble because of it.

I just updated and had the same problem Sean noted. After I logged into Tiger, a window popped up and asked for my system password. I entered it once and it said it was incorrect so I clicked cancel and everything appears to work fine.

I updated the iPod shuffle with 1.1.2. When I open the iPod shuffle info in iTunes it has the option to put on "sound check." Does anyone know what this does?

I'd like to point out that the password for the System keychain is *not* your login password. I have absolutely no clue what it is, but I know it's not your login password because I've tried viewing passwords in my System keychain (in Keychain Access) with no luck on 2 different computers, both of which I am the only user.
Now I'm off to go install the update.

I think your system password isn't set unless you specifically do so by opening NetInfo Manager and using the Security menu to "Enable Root User" or something like that.
I do it when I get a new Mac so its been a while since the last time I had to do it.
By the way no problems here after running the update.

Ok, what just happened to me, when I installed the security update, is really weird. Everything installed fine, and when I went to restart everything went through the motions of shutting down. The screen shut off and Monty hung in limbo. I finally had to force his power off and repower him to get him back. After 1 successful restart and one normal shut down, all seems well.

Everything was fine, but now there is some message about saying "Klaatu, Barrada, Nikto!" into the audio input if permissions are off.
And my machine's name is Gort? Please tell me I am not the only one.

No troubles on my iBook with Panther 10.3.9. However, I was greeted by some jibberish about an updated version of keychain and whether airport should update to use the newer version. I hit update and it seems to work. *shrugs*

Jeff: 'Sound Check' is a volume stabilizer in iTunes and other iPods that wasn't previously available for Shuffles. It tries (valiantly, but not always very successfully) to keep the mean volume of all your music roughly the same, so you don't have to turn the iPod down when 'that one really loud track' comes on.

Installed fine with no problem. Also seems to have fixed a problem I had when loading Mail, as the dock icon would become invisible for a minute or so after loading. It's stopped doing it now though...

Fine on iMac G5, same 'problem' as others with System Password issue on Powerbook running connected by Airport Express. I noticed in the Details section that it was actualy an Airport password it wanted. I tried my PPA network password but it was incorrect. Cancelled it and all is fine. Heart-stopping moment there..!
