Video iPod on October 12?
There's a little item on iLounge about a "special event" from Apple on October 12. Anyone remember what else has happened in October from Apple? Last year it was U2 iPod. And the name of the event is "One More Thing." But the clincher is a movie curtain on the invite...So is this the video iPod? Time will tell. Perhaps it's something to do with HD content. You know, that in light of the fact that it's the "year of HD?" Maybe it's a Sony-branded video iPod capable of only playing ATRAC Sony Music videos for $3.49? Yeah, that'd be sweet. Let the rampant speculation begin!

I belive that it will be a update on the G5 . probely a Dual Core G5 .... I actualy think that Steve will say something like ... "Not only do we have a Dual Core processor but A DUAL dual Core ... (like 2 Dual Core G5 Processors) ... like he did when he presentated the 30 inc Cinema Display .... We will also probely see a Ipod Video (toght Steve have said that "the future of ipod is not video but images" ) .. if they do release a Ipod with video I will be mostly supprised . If you heard is previasely speach ... but I do strongly beliave that we will SEE a DUAL Dual Core Processors ... 2 x 2 x 3.0 Ghz = 12 Ghz ! .. Would be sweet ... Also . Well we see a Dual Core based G5 Server ... would also be sweet for render farms .. Imagine what you could do with 10 Dual Dual Core G5 Servers .. = 120 Ghz ... I think the word for the Event is Dual ... and on the ipod side ... I do not know ... but I gues Video Pod ... If you look at the invetation ... Lets se tomorrow ... .. time to go to sleep ... Jobs shot down the idea years ago when Gates suggested it, saying that it's easier to make a cheap pair of headphones sound like 10K speakers than make a handheld feel like a 60 inch widescreen. Maybe it's a wireless iPod that can download directly from the iTunes store without attaching to a computer. And gets satellite radio. And does your laundry and cleans the dishes. Now that would be one hell of an iPod. Maybe it could print money too. I would definitely buy that iPod. Cool.

As in: hey, you important media types, tell us if you'll be there - and come help us whore out our next product. Mossberg, Pogue, I see you. And thinksecret's reporting it'll be computers, anyway. Not a pod of any sort.

Would be an awesome strategy - tell everyone they have a year before you switch over, let your current Halo Effect sell as much stuff as you can, and then boom! before people get a chance to stop buying older hardware you bring out the new stuff, right before Christmas!
October 05 2005 at 10:25 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, if the Intel thing is really being delayed another 3/4 year - it could be some new portable hardware using latest PPC chips. But I think we would have had more wind of this. My guess is that it (hardware) would be totally out of left field - tablet Mac or handheld w/Video capability. I don't think there are any flash chips left for Apple to use in a non-Nano device, - so it would be HD based. Upgrade of iTMS would not be out of the question. Given what the music companies are threatening - Apple may want to add video content to diversity their iTMS content. Will they call it the iTMVS? :-D We might see an across the board product upgrade, as the their stock of current models seems to be drying up a bit.

Someone mentioned that Apple bought some extra space for this announcement. This could mean a few things but I'm thinking computer hardware. The powerbook line is about 2+ years overdue for a significant upgrade. I'd start looking there.

Let's hope that Apple openes up their DRM scheme so others can offer paid content services as well through iTunes. Video iPod? No way! Consumers switch TV channels each 15 minutes. Consumers watch internet videos on a PC screen for max 5 minutes. On a mobile device it's just 1 to 2 minutes. Not much audience for a movie! You need a big screen to see films. A Video iPod can only be interesting if it has a high quality digital video output for big screens. This also means huge decompression performance. So my bet is on digital home cinema. Video Airport Express, so your Mac does the decoding. Or a dedicated Mac Mini based set top box.

Sony and Sharp are doing great with their portable displays over in Japan (sharp Aquos etc) Why not a wireless display that connects to your Ap Express for streaming music/videos/photos
