Video iPod on October 12?
There's a little item on iLounge about a "special event" from Apple on October 12. Anyone remember what else has happened in October from Apple? Last year it was U2 iPod. And the name of the event is "One More Thing." But the clincher is a movie curtain on the invite...So is this the video iPod? Time will tell. Perhaps it's something to do with HD content. You know, that in light of the fact that it's the "year of HD?" Maybe it's a Sony-branded video iPod capable of only playing ATRAC Sony Music videos for $3.49? Yeah, that'd be sweet. Let the rampant speculation begin!

Maybe it is a cover for my Nano!
But seriously, if a new iPod comes out it will be the third I buy in a month! This has got to slow down!

If it is a video iPod (which I doubt) I WILL NOT buy one, and I don't know anyone who would.
If it is iTVS (iTunes Video Store) I would be happy!
If it was a Mac Mini entertainment system that would replace my aging TiVo, I would be THRILLED! As well as knowing what to put on my Christmas list.
If it was a Intel Laptop, I would be torqued because I just got a AlBook, but excited otherwise.
If it was a Holiday Season price reduction on everything they sell, I would wet my pants.
Butthat's just me...

hey Chris - i know you don't know me but I'd snap up a video iPod right away. Of course they won't just update the software on a 60GB iPod Color to allow video, its going to have a widescreen (I'm thinking on the back / touch screen for the front). It'll be slim and sync my mov / avi / divX (ooh, maybe not divX) anyhoo - I have a PSP right now, and gaming on the go is no use, watching films is fun just the converting Sony didn't work out (didn't want anyone to work out).
If Apple have realllllly thought about the video iPod - it's going to rock. If it's another iPhone... bah! No, that was motorolla, nothing to do with Apple's Industrial Design team, so - lets leave it there. I'm pretty thrilled, I need to update my 3G iPod looks so silly.

I hope it's a video iPod. Not that I have the money to buy one, but I can sure wish.

What if it's the merging of Pixar and Apple? That could explain all the extra space Apple just bought. Or an Apple iLabel - recording, distributing, marketing of bands. Or...or...the iPod Army that will march up to Redmond and take over the world? If the curtains open and Pinky and The Brain come out, I'll be scared.

I don't think it'll be iPod related. Maybe it's the vPod. Oh wait, that's like an iPod. Maybe Apple's opening the iPod up to developers! Ohh.... Ok, all I have is iPod on the brain.

It's GOT to be an iPod Video & upgrade of iTMS...AppleInsider has article supposedly confirming it:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1304
and one more thing...
...is it just me or was the upgrade to iTunes 5 just not as "wow" inducing as a major number release should have been? And the original iPod has been stuck in the 4th Gen for ages...
I predict the 5th generation iPod will be an iPod video...for those who want just music, the nano's for you, especially with all the studies stating that most people carry around less than 2000 or so songs at a time...and a TRUE iTunes 5, featuring the new iTMS (iTunes MEDIA Store).
Can't wait 'til Tuesday...

Callum - I agree. I radical new "pod" for video would be worth seeing. I still wouldn't buy one though - no matter how cool they were. It doesn't fit my lifestyle. I never have a scenario in my life when I can sit and watch video when I am not already close to my TV. I can conceive of those who might - mass transit riders (but they likely don't have the $$ to buy a video device) - frequent fliers (but there are not enough of them to create a market share), but I'm just saying, I don't know anyone who fits the mold. I know dozens of folks who have iPods - not your typical gadget folks - and they all use their iPods in one of two ways - while jogging or at their desk while they work. Video pods won't fit in that scenario.
I just don't believe that Apple is going to produce a video iPod because I think they have done the market research, and the market for having movies in your pocket is not big enough to offset R&D and production of a device, no matter how sweet it might be.
On the other hand EVERYONE IN AMERICA has a TV. If they can bring the simplicity of iTunes/iPod to a media device that plugs into a TV... the market is STUPENDOUSLY JAGNORMOUS.
I'm not a computer industry guy, I'm just saying, if I were Steve Jobs, and I were looking to crush Microsoft, that is how I would do it.

oh, Maybe uncle Steve just made a really cool video in iMovie and knowing we, media-whores, jump on his every word - he's set up this whole event to share with us "Cute Dogs in Funny Hats" or other SouthPark related crazyness.
... what other products are looking for an upgrade. Then again, it could be the closing-curtains on the end of an era, i.e. the last G5's before we all go Intel. Remember the OS 9 'funeral' - i don't - anyone got footage!? Anyhoo, Apple must love our musings, anyone listening?
Chris - remember we actually don't need anything, lifestyle shmyfstyle - iPods are ridiculous, computers and TV doubly-so (i don't own a TV) we don't (the mass public) buy this stuff because we need it or find it useful, it fills no gaps. We're mindless consumers, I don't need an iPod Video, but I'll certainly want one. Goal to Apple.
Didn't apple try set-top-boxes back in the 90's - Google will know.

I think it's going to be a free movie ticket with every purchase of an iPod for the next month.
That'll be HUGE!!!

ithe video ipod wouldn't be just for video. it would be an upgraded ipod as well. (probably 5th generation) so those who want music get just music and those who want video and music have the capabilities.

I think that this new item that Apple is releasing is going to be much more along the lines of recent speculation about a convergence device that would merge the concept of a video iPod with a lightweight ultraportable tablet.

Apple is one of the best companies for creating speculation. Especcially trough their icon hints, and random discontinuation of their services (iTunes movies).

Sean! you stole my thunder! either that you're reading my postings. I think a merger with Pixar is imminent. Yeah, yeah Steve Jobs is CEO of both... So?
I think if you give a critical eye to both companies, Jobs has put a lot more focus on Apple, and it shows. I think Jobs wants both companies under one roof so he can have the control he needs over both of them.
Just imagine, Apple developing the software to help Pixar make killer animated movies, and the Pixar design team helps Apple design a killer GUI for OSX.
Ahhh, heaven!

We've already got a video iPod

lol, I know it's not the same thing. I am glad to finally see it happen. I wonder if all some iPods might get video feature in a firmware update, since we know it's possible? My guess is Apple wants us to upgrade, and most will.

A video iPod is neat and all, but frankly I would pin my hopes (not my expectations, just my hopes) on Noah's idea (tablet-convergence) or a media center. Or Apple could do something really different and pay attention to their line of personal computers for once. (No offense to iPodders, just saying.)

I imagine his Royal Steveness will likely be announcing the merger of Apple and Pixar.
Along those lines, we can expect a multimedia device, more along the lines of consumer electronics than computer electronics device (an upgraded Mac mini). However, if there is an addition (and it will be an addition, a video only iPod would be useless) to the iPod line, in that it will be able to play video, I think we could at least see firmware updates to the iPod Photos, Colours, and nanos so that they can play back the music videos from the iTMS.

I could see the Apple + Pixar thing happing but it's not going to be the reason for the big event. Yes, Steve J. is going to get up on stage and be like "By the way Apple and Pixar are now one. That's all. No new iPod or PowerBooks or anything. Have a nice day."
I'm putting my money on an iPod Video or some off the wall unexpected product.(I don't see the tablet Mac coming)
