Store the Mail library on an iPod

Mail iconIf you're tired of waiting for Mail to sync IMAP folders on the various machines you use, or if you simply want to keep your Mail library with you wherever you go in fear of the internets turning off one day, I've found a fairly simple how-to at Hawk Wings written just for you. This 4-step process, which involves moving a couple folders and pasting a couple commands into the Terminal, will allow you to move and use your Mail database on an external drive, while Mail is none the wiser. Of course, you'll have to go through this easy process on each machine you want to use your now-mobile Mail support directory, and you'll have to have your external drive mounted any time you want to use Mail, but this sounds like a slick solution for a few instances I can think of where the whole "checking email over the net" thing might not be an option.

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
