Think Secret: No video iPod on Oct. 12th

onemoreAccording to this article at Think Secret, we shouldn't be holding our breath for a video iPod from Apple later this month. Instead, they suggest, we can expect revamped PowerBooks and Power Macs. Think Secret does admit that details on these updates are "scarce."

It seems to me that the rumor sites just aren't nailing the details like they used to. I don't know if they've been intimidated by the smackdown Apple put on Think Secret recently, or if old sources have finally run dry. Either way, I won't be surprised if we don't see an iPod video next week. Why would Apple want to detract from sales of its brand-spanking new nano just before the holiday shopping season? Plus, Steve himself has said "No" to a video iPod time and time again. It's just not going to happen.

How about the tablet Mac or a PDA? They've driven Rio out of the road before, they sure can do that with Palm.

I don't think there will be a video iPod at all. Read my theory on my blog (it's a bit too long to comment): http://www.happenchance.co.uk/archives/2005/10/the_apple_event.php

Apple is producing an iTunes Jukebox. It's a standalone iTunes client for the home that's intended to integrate with existing stereo equipment. It includes an 120gb HD, wi-fi, and a built-in iPod dock all in a stylish, compact enclosure with a 10" color LCD display. And, here's the kicker... it runs on an Intel chip and retails for $399.

BOOM http://www.broadcom.com/collateral/pb/97318-PB00-R.pdf http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/3089/ http://www.macobserver.com/article/2005/04/06.3.shtml Broadcom and Apple are two of the founding members of the HyperTransport Consortium. QuickTime Furthers Open Standards A few years ago, the International Organization for Standardization selected the QuickTime file format as the basis for MPEG-4. As a result, QuickTime embraced open standards and now leads the market in MPEG-4, 3GPP and 3GPP2 content creation and playback. Apple continues to build on this commitment to open standards by incorporating H.264/AVC directly into QuickTime. And since H.264/AVC is an open standard, any company in the world can create devicessuch as mobile phones, set-top boxes, DVD players and more that will work with QuickTime. Get ready for QuickTime with H.264/AVC to change the digital video universe. Youll be able to experience this addition to QuickTime in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Apple fixed my office mess with two products Mac mini, and Airport express. And to add I have never been more impressed. Plus my Mac seems to play 720p very well and its not upgraded. I really need apple to fix the mess in my living room, multiy vendor, incompatible, wiring. This would be along the same lines as the products coming out from IO data, Buffalo technologies, Zensonic, Linksys, X-box!!...everyone and there mother.... And if broadcom made this set top box, where is it no one else wants to use it? Apple would kill with a clean white, and brushed aluminum. IP set-top box and Itunes video downloads. Vpod, why the screen would be two small. Music videos? You cant watch them driving, would take to much space on the hard drive to be valuable. A waste of apples time, unless it outputs to the TV, but thats missing the big seller movies. BOOM

The BBC slip seems to add credibility - remember when Amazon displayed updated PowerMacs before Apple announced them? iPod Video or not, I'm looking forward to seeing what Steve & Co announce next week.

A girl I work with, well her boyfriend's brother is an engineer at Apple.. and apparently he is in China at the mo, finalising the manufacturing process of.. and I quote.. "a brand new something for Apple". She could not elaborate as she had herself not been told anything more than that.. but.. she seemed to think it wasnt simply another music iPod.. I'm pretty sure Apple will launch a brand new product.. video iPod perhaps, or some kind of media centric bolt-on to allow existing Macs to become Media Centres.. Whatever happens I for one am hugely excited.

Yeah, the BBC (who are hosting something for Apple on Oct 12) 'announced' that a iPod Video would be revealed along with download service. It was available to 'listen again' but is gone now, and they haven't re-reported it in subsequent bulletins. This is the first point in which I am 'starting' to believe it to be true (and I rarely believe, I thought the Mac Mini was fake when I saw the photos of it after it was released)
