Did Steve drop a hint about the upcoming event?

onemoreLast year, in an exclusive interview with Macworld Magazine that centered around the Mac's 20th anniversary, Steve Jobs was asked about the future of computers, television and home media centers. While he stated that he sees a fundamental difference in the experience of watching television and interacting with a computer, "...basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on," he did have this to say when asked about the merging of the two devices via home media centers:

"Well, [computers and televisions] want to link sometimes. Like, when you make a movie, you burn a DVD and you take it to your DVD player. Someday that could happen over AirPort, so you don’t have to burn a DVD — you can just watch it right off your computer on your television set."

Since a DVD over Airport "...could happen," do you think it will? I would love to see such a thing come true.

I would love to see this product. I think, for a product of this nature to launch, complimentary software would have to be shipped with it. In an article I wrote on the subject, I implied that I think QuickTIme is a great candidate for this functionality.

considering the quiet upgrade of the mini mac which I have always planned to use as a Mac/DVR/Tivo with an Elgato or Miglia - It would be PERFECT

I have been saying they are building this thing for well over a year! They also stand to gain a lot of ground if they can sell you downloadable HD TV shows and Movies because currently, (HD movies in H.264/1080p are about the same size as a DVD) and probably for almost another year or more, there is NO WAY for consumers to buy ANY HD recordings to watch on their HD equipment. I have a 1080p TV and the only thing HD I really watch on it are the home movies I shoot on my HD camcorder. The addition of such a hardware device really is almost a necessity because Apple's own roadmap doesn't even put the horesepower or the video hardware needed to decode HD H.264 into the low end for at least a year or more. Even the current high end dual G5's weaken under the strain... But dedicated H.264 decoder IC's exist and don't even really cost that much comparitively. Apple would have a HUGE market for a $300-$400 device like an "Airport Video" -- to think they are not at least working on such a device is absolutely insane. Mid October would be the perfect time to intro it too since it's clear there won't be any HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players in time for the holidays. Further anecdotal evidence: 1) Apple's DVD Player software has added native support for opening 'folders' instead of discs within the last year (pretty sure of this, it may have been added somewhat earlier) pointing the way in an interface sense to working with local movies. Adding "FairPlay" and a bit of a frontend similar to iTunes and you have yourself downloadable movies. 2) Apple's DVD Player and DVD authoring software (somewhat inexplicably) began supporting the draft HD-DVD standard this year. Although Apple is in the Blu-Ray camp, HD-DVD is easier to implement as the workflow is exactly the same as DVD. Maybe this is a push to get studios a simple way of authoring HD content for early distribution? 3) Year of HD? We have to come full circle here. Most mac users are not creating conteng but consuming it, so either Apple's statement is very narrow in scope or we haven't seen all their cards. Content creators need something to do with all that HD content they are supposed to be producing other than just sit on it!

I currently use an Elgato Eyehome, and it is a great device for watching stored movies and listening to music from my mac. It suffers greatly from the lack of extensive video codec support, not to mention no iTunes purchased music support either. Apple could release a "Video Airport", that I am sure would be every bit as great as their current products. Perhaps all the recent rumors about upgraded unmarked Mac Minis being shipped is a hint at the device we have all been clamoring for since the initial release of the Mini? If Apple made a media center device, I would run, not walk, to the Apple store to by one.

I've been wanting that for a very, very long time. Elgato (http://www.elgato.com/) makes some wireless video products, but they are incredibly limited on what codecs they support. I want any Quicktime file to be able to stream the video to my tv.

Has anyone noticed that the curtin logo behind the "one more time" text is almost exactly the same as the curtin on the Pixar "The Theater" link. I noticed this the other day. Could it be a hint leading to a future merger of the companys? Or could I just be going crazy. Just a thought to ponder...enjoy!
