Website intends to publicly destroy an iPod
Apparently, not eveyone likes the iPod. SmashMyiPod.com is collecting donations so that they can purchase a 20GB iPod, and then immediately smash it at The Apple Store. They'll film the event and then post the resulting footage.Um, yeah. Here's another idea: Why not just take the hard-earned money that your readers are collecting and toss it into a garbage can? Seems like the same end result to me.
But we all enjoy freedom of speech, so rock on. Just make sure you wear protective eyewear.

On a related note, I am taking up a collection to buy me a Mercedes SL600R. It's only a matter of time before it gets damaged somehow, and I promise to take pics of whatever happens to it (eventually). Shoot, if everyone gives me gas money too, I'll even drive it to an Apple store (nearest one is 2 hours away). Yeah!

Or why not just say "iPod sucks" if that's how you feel, then collect money for donations to victims of say, the tsunami, the American hurricanes, or the recent earthquake in Pakistan?
The time people spend obsessing about things that just don't matter never ceases to amaze me.

Oh the horror!!! Please don't destroy an ipod. They are so rare.
Listen I love my ipod but please. The cult of apple is scary. It's almost as bad as the Linux zealots. This sounds hillarious.

Probably a scam. Think about it, if he collects more money than he needs, which he probably will, do you think he'll refund it?
Me neither.

Sicko.
Scam? It very well could be. I think I'd feel better inside if it was, personally.

No artist has been this bold since Piero Manzoni shit in a small tin.
(it sold for roughly $40,000 USD)

I dunno. I think Chris Burden was a bit bolder than the shit-in-a-can artist. He had someone shoot him with a rifle in front of an audience as a performance piece.

Now if this SmashMyiPod guy planned to smash an iPod on his own head until it broke (the iPod, that is), or if he were to eat it, then I'd definitely throw in few bucks!

The problem with this is, Apple still gets the revenue and resulting profit. Why not take the money, buy several used/busted ones from Ebay, take them to the Apple store and do it there. That might make more of a statement than continuing to support Apple.

I have a sneaky suspicion that apple doesn't really give two hoots.

Will not Apple have a problem with this guy making a mess in their store? To destroy the iPod with any sort of fanfare he will likely have to a) slam it into the floor or b) smash it against the floor with his foot, either of which will likely cause damage (albeit minor) to the Apple store.

He could give the money to charity, but so could I instead of buying my new Shuffle. Did I? No sir, neither did I when purchasing my PowerBook earlier on this year.
All hail to railing against ubiquity. If only Windows were similarly smashable.

Too bad Ars Technica beat them to destroying an iPod.

If I was the manager of an apple store I would invite them to come in, buy one, and smash it, because they are still going to sell no matter what and hey it's just more money for the store.

Here's an idea - give the money to charity. Idiots. Don't give them the oxygen of publicity.

Agree with Marc... Why don't they donate it to some poor kid who lost their iPod in the Hurricanes... or give the money to help with the Pakistan earthquake. People have too much money and not enough compassion if they want this to happen. Please stop feeding his publicity.

Personally, I think he's one of those guys who has never used an iPod and just hates it "because they're so popular". Well, wouldn't it be funny if he raised enough money and decided he liked iPods. Another intesting note: How in the world is he going to destory it? Apple's built them pretty strong, it's not like throwing it against the floor of the Apple store would break it.
