Website intends to publicly destroy an iPod
Apparently, not eveyone likes the iPod. SmashMyiPod.com is collecting donations so that they can purchase a 20GB iPod, and then immediately smash it at The Apple Store. They'll film the event and then post the resulting footage.Um, yeah. Here's another idea: Why not just take the hard-earned money that your readers are collecting and toss it into a garbage can? Seems like the same end result to me.
But we all enjoy freedom of speech, so rock on. Just make sure you wear protective eyewear.

Better not tell the Engadget guys about this. Knowing what the commenters over there are like it wont be pretty.....
October 11 2005 at 3:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLook, I immigrated to this country 15 years ago. I love it, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but people like this and their ilk make me realize why the rest of the world hates spoiled, wasteful Americans. This is a free country, so they are welcome to spend this money in any way they wish, but the very action of buying something just to destroy it shows an incredible amount of disrespect for other people's effort (such as the effort that went into designing, and packaging this product), and for the product itself. They may claim that you're doing this for some lofty cause, but all that they really are is a bunch of spoiled brats who don't know how good they have it by living in a country where everything is available at your slightest whim. I'm not suggesting they donate money to starving children in whereever. Just think that there may be a better way to promote your cause than satisfying some primal, beastly urge to witness the destruction of a well-crafted product, whatever that product may be.
October 11 2005 at 2:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFound this on the guy's forum. Apparantly this kid is quite sick, a spoiled product of a amateuristic schooling system where international history is apparantly not a topic. I don't care much about destroying the iPod, I mean, an iPod is just another thing, but after I read his 'view on the world' I am more worried about this person. I assume/hope that his views are not typical for the american continent. Quote: In the beginning, all humans had similar resources and advantages. Its not really my fault that people in Europe in North America strived to succeed while people in Africa just fucked monkeys and got HIV and now we have to help them because we got shit that they don't. If it were up to me... I'd cut off all contact between us and just let them exterminate themselves. /end quote.

I would not pay anyone for it, but I would certainly watch it if it happened and they can have the ad revenue from me giving them one page view.

The guy might have already given lots to various appeals, your desire to contribute to charity doesn't necessarily follow your spending habits.
October 11 2005 at 7:55 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPersonally, I think he's one of those guys who has never used an iPod and just hates it "because they're so popular". Well, wouldn't it be funny if he raised enough money and decided he liked iPods. Another intesting note: How in the world is he going to destory it? Apple's built them pretty strong, it's not like throwing it against the floor of the Apple store would break it.
October 11 2005 at 6:13 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAgree with Marc... Why don't they donate it to some poor kid who lost their iPod in the Hurricanes... or give the money to help with the Pakistan earthquake. People have too much money and not enough compassion if they want this to happen. Please stop feeding his publicity.

October 11 2005 at 5:06 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyToo bad Ars Technica beat them to destroying an iPod. http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars/3 If I was the manager of an apple store I would invite them to come in, buy one, and smash it, because they are still going to sell no matter what and hey it's just more money for the store.
