Is podcasting at its 14th minute?
Quick, what's more fun than listening to radio? Watching video, of course. Here's another question for you: Would you rather hear a description of the man in a barrel going over Niagara Falls, or would you rather watch it yourself? Ok, one more: You can listen to a podcast and engage the "theatre of the mind," or watch a vodcast, and see the speaker as well as exactly what s/he is talking about. Which are you going to choose? Me, too. More after the jump.I've always been a lukewarm fan of podcasting. It's not the content, as there are some very well done, interesting and fun podcasts available. I've just never found one that jumped right out and grabbed me, really held my attention and convinced me to click that "Subscribe" button. In contrast, I've become addicted to DTV. Seeing other people and what their lives are like in other parts of the world is infinitely interesting to me. Given the choice, I'll pick vodcast over podcast every time. Now that I can watch homegrown video right on my iPod or TV, well, my choice has been made. Don't get me wrong, I think homegrown radio is cool. But homegrown TV is just so much better.
The only hindrance is, of course, bandwidth and time. Producing a podcast is a much less time consuming process that shooting/editing/narrating video. Plus, you need the online storage space and bandwidth to distribute your work to the masses. These are no minor hurdles. I don't know what the answer is, other than tossing wads of cash at your online host of choice, but I'm betting some enterprising young geek is way ahead of me on this one.

What's a vod? I hate the terms vlog and vodcasting. I think "podcasting" is a big enough term to accomodate video and audio. My company will certainly be producing both for clients, because different content will require different approaches. Audio will be much cheaper. Video will be much more expensive. "Podcasting" for me means making content available on on-demand. A radio station and a television station are both broadcasting, meaning, their goal is to get to as many people as possible. In podcasting, the stakes are different. You're searching for niche audiences, and the more specific, the better. That's podcasting. All podcasters have done such a great job of getting this term, "podcasting", into the public sphere. Why muddy it up by coming up with a new term that doesn't make any sense? Tell me what a vod is.

It's a really easy way to create blogs with auto updating RSS feeds, or feeds which include podcasts. The interface is gorgeous simplicity, too. It's definitely worth a shot.

October 13 2005 at 8:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI say video podcasts. I really hate just listening to people talk. I am a visual person. That's why I am experimenting with video podcasts already, and have my own travel vodcast on iTunes (Don Pedro's travels, find it if you search for Bahamas). The only thing is i have to figure out a way to create a tool or automator action that makes creating the XML entries easy, editing them in TextEdit is not all that fun. or is there a tool for that already? Anyway: audio podcasts: OUT (my opinion, everybody has his own prefs) video podcasts: IN And with that I mean for "consumption" on the computer. I don't know how it will be on the road on the new iPod (cool I bet at least for commuters in the cities).

"vodcasting" does not require more than what most alreaady have. 1. a camera (you can use your digital still or webcam take internet-quality video) 2. editing software (windows XP and OSX come with free video editing programs which work great) 3. Bandwidth (Ourmedia.org, blip.tv, both offer unlimited bandwidth, unlimited server space and the assurance that your content will be on the internet long after you die FOR FREE!!!) 4. Time (you can film something and then directly upload it, blip even has a service that will record from safari and post it to your blog immediatley, you can email video posts from a phone and they will post it directly, remember this is all free, you can take days to edit an epic video, or 15 minutes to make a number of posts [check out www.speedvlogging.com]) Do some research, then start talking....

To produce a podcast, all one truly needs is a decent microphone, a copy of Audacity, somewhere to host the feed, and maybe an hour or two, depending on how long and how complex the show format is. Compare that to what a vodcast requires: a decent video camera, a copy of (insert video editing program here), a not-insubstantial amount of bandwidth, and a great deal more time than an hour to edit it. Don't get me wrong: I think vodcasts are going to flourish with the backing of the iPod. What I just can't believe, however, is that it will spark the same kind of revolution that podcasting was and, arguably, still is.

October 13 2005 at 12:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAs one person put it, they both have their place and I don't think one will replace the other. Rather I see video and audio podcasting co-existing. In the niagra falls example, for instance, yes I would want to watch a video of the guy going over the falls, but if I had to listen to Rush Limbaugh or Al Franken pontificate on the subject, I would rather listen to them than watch them talking into a microphone. So, I think you will see video shorts, not unlike the types of documentary shorts you see on Current, or news stories from FOX News and CNN, being popular on the video side, and commentators such as Limbaugh or Franken popular on the audio side. The one thing to remember about video is that there is more involved in production and unless it is content that is being repurposed from a news channel or some other medium, I don't think you will see many going out to create a video podcast. However, I can see video podcasts that are instructional how-to types of things being popular on a small device. I think for video podcasts to really take off, I think you will need iPod devices with wifi so you can download them directly to the device so you do not have the download and transfer from the pc. of course, issues like this will be resolved as the technology evolves.
October 12 2005 at 11:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHonestly people, catch up with the times...you can call them what you will but video blog/vlog are the 2 most popular terms second, NZ needs to cool his jets when it comes to ripping on independant video creators...there is so much good content out there it is way too hard to sift through. I try to do that at joshspsicks.blogspot.com but it is hard to keep up with it all. Third, DTV is an infant of a program compared to FireANT. It is made especially for the video blog, with tagging, flagging, commenting, filtering, it has it all. (and will soon have ipod video-export) getfireant.com fourth, this advent of the ipod that does video, is just crying for short-length, small filesize, 3X4 aspect ratio content...Where do we find this content for free? Video blogs. fifth, really interested in video blogging? go to www.wearethemedia.com, to find out what's going on in the "vlogosphere" and then drop the microphone, and start your own at freevlog.org the media revolution is upon us, don't fall behind.
