Apple pulls Eminem's iPod ad
I thought Eminem and Apple had made up. Late last night, Apple pulled the new Eminem iPod ad from its website. The updated "silhouette" style ad featured Em performing "Lose Yourself," and is supposed to start airing on television next week. Steve sure seemed pretty proud of it during the press event. I hope it still makes it to TV, it's a pretty cool ad.[Via iPodNN]

they'll be selling the ad for $1.99 ~ it's kind of a cool music video. it's really cool, honestly. people will want it, i think they figure they can make money off it, or they should be, or maybe eminem just thinks it shouldn't be able to be downloaded for free... (his contract for the ad may not extend to free downloads off the web)

#3 Why would the add offend you? I am not a fan of eminem or his music. I am not a huge fan of hip-hop, though there are a handful of artists in the genre that I enjoy very much. To say that the add was "really offensive" makes it sound like somebody dropped the F-bomb or had a wardrobe malfunction.

I like Eminem. In fact, I like him a lot. And regardless of whether you enjoy hip-hop's lyrical content or personalities, you should not let these factors preclude you from appreciating Eminem's lyricisms.
Ancient Roman and Greek poets were critiqued during their times for discussing outrageously sexual or deviant themes and today they are lauded for their unsurpassed skills in terms of obeying meter and developing new techniques. His rhyme structures are innovative and many of his rhetorical devices are groundbreaking in rap.
To say that you just want to slap [Eminem] demonstrates your inability to appreciate his music for what it is; Steve Jobs doesn't necessarily agree with everything Kanye West or Eminem have to say, but that doesn't undermine his ability to appreciate their musical stylings and offer both artists world-class showcases for their performances.

Why would Apple produce another Eminem ad after what happened with the earlier ad? Is Apple a glutton for punishment?

The lawsuit relevant to the first Eminem advertisment concerned usage of Eminem's music for advertising without his permission, and without royalties accreditation. The ad that was recently made was not only beneficial to Eminem as a method of advertising his new greatest hits album Curtain Call but also was made with permission from Eminem and Interscope.
Apple has a good track record with musicians, especially those from Interscope, as several iPods have been featured in music videos of Interscope artists working with Eminem. Apple probably intended to return the favor, though a small child with short blonde hair probably was not the most effective way to do so. Apple settled the suit just as they do whenever the lawsuits come from attorneys representing The Beattles occur (The Beattles have a trademark on Apple Music).

It was less of "late last night" and more of around 6 PM EST.
I noticed that there was an error whenever I'd try to view the video, and now it's completely gone. Bleh, i didn't care for it. I liked the old iPod sillhouette commercials.

I'm not a huge fan of Eminem, but am a fan of hiphop. That ad? It was INSANELY GREAT. Unbelievable. I've never seen a commercial as cool as that one. You think the iPod is popular now? If you have a campaign done in the new silhouette style (and ATTITUDE, more specifically) that's demonstrated in that ad, and Apple's cool-factor will go through the roof. It speaks to the hiphop generation, and there's a lot of people part of that generation. All about the attitude.
Please don't hate that ad!

The ad is back on the air today, 10/16/05. It's, you know, more of the same.
It's a bit off a much better piece done back in 2002 by psyop for LUGZ shoes. The LUGZ piece cemented this look as the de facto look for all urban mograph. But it was about 90X better--full 3D, remarkable character animation and killer camera moves. That's three years ago, and from where I sit watching basically everything that comes out in motion graphics, nothing new has occurred to people who do hip-hop graphics since then--same insipid paint-drips (not in LUGZ thank god_, same palette, same silhouettes, same semi-transparent cityscape. It's an idea-free world of posing where people can't be bothered to think up their own ideas.
The old LUGZ ad is here:
http://www.psyop.tv.
projects
LUGZ
(There are two, one is older and was hugely influential in motion work. The newer LUGZ from 2003 didn't make waves.)
