Today's press event: Rumor recap
Later today, Apple will hold its second press conference in so many weeks. Before the big announcement(s), let's have a brief recap of the rumors surrounding today's event.- New Powerbooks. Several rumor sites are reporting that new Powerbooks will be released this afternoon. In light of the new iMac, I couldn't help but think of this article we posted back in September, featuring a patent Apple filed for a laptop with a camera built into the clasp of the lid. Will the Powerbook get the same integrated iSight treatment as the iMac or even (gasp!) FrontRow?!?
- New Power Macs. It feels like the G5 Power Macs haven't received a substantial update in a while. Think Secret seems to believe that they'll bear dual-core PowerPC 970MP processors as of this afternoon. That would be pretty nice.
- Image editing software. Is Apple working on an image editing application? Think Photoshop's tools with iPhoto's interface. Today's event is the PhotoPlus Expo after all, and the invitations Apple sent out featured a camera lens.

Floorplan link seems wrong.
This one works for me:
http://www.photoplusexpo.com/ppe/exhibit_hall/exhibitor_details.jsp?detailKey=2795570
Go to www.photoplusexpo.com, Exhibit Hall -> Floor plan to find exhibitor #338 owns the biggest booth, then go Exhibitor Hall -> Exhibitor list and do a search for 338 and click on the name ("Reserve") to reveal the address.

Would Apple have spent the time and money to create FrontRow and PhotoBooth for just one piece of hardware?
I think that the new PowerBooks when they come (if not today) will have iSights embedded in them, with PhotoBooth and maybe FrontRow. And, We will see FrontRow on Mac mini's. (Yippee!)

I wonder if new iSight capable iBooks may also be on the cards as the iMac is the consumer product whereas the PowerBook is the professional product.

I hope that Apple doesn't step too hard on Adobe's toes re: this photo/image editing software thing. The last thing I need is for Adobe to yank Photoshop from the Mac ecosystem.
As a Mac-using photographer and graphic designer, I'd be plenty screwed.

In regards to David's comment:
Microsoft has tried to do their own photo editing software about 100 times now, and it never works. In fact I wrote the libraries that MS licensed just to put native image support into their OS ( a la Photo Editor that came with Office, go to the Help-About menu and it says Media Cybernetics - my former company).
But if any software needed the Apple touch, it's Photoshop. Talk about feature creep! For anyone who hasn't used the product since version 1.0, it's a complete mystery and way too big for its own good.
I'd love something between Photoshop (extreme Pro), and iPhoto (a wrapper around Quartz). There are plenty of basic filters, editing techniques, and transforms that are a snap to implement and can be used as extensions to iPhoto.
To actually try to kill Photoshop would take a decade of development effort at least.
