Two new Power Mac Observations
I'm sure we will have a much more in depth post about the new Power Mac G5's coming along, but I noticed two things that this update has in common with the new iMac G5's.They are:
- Mighty Mouse comes standard
- No internal Modem

Umm... am I the only person a little bit perturbed by the Mighty Mouse supplanting the standard mouse? I mean, the Mighty Mouse is only the most disappointing and least functional Mac product in my memory. *sigh* Yet another dilution of the product to woo PC users... I still remember the good old days, back when my cinema display could power on my PowerMac and when my iPod supported fast data transfers. Christ, how long do you think it'll be before Jobs decides what will REALLY sway PC users is vulnerability to spyware? Of course, if that happened, the "feature" would at least get a groovy name, like "iSpy" or "spyPod".

I would love to move this over to one of the new dual-core G5's" Aw maaan, also there's a new bus which means my 8 GIGS of RAM in my current Dual 2.7 won't work (at least not to full effect)! "3. The pair of removable fans in front of the processors is gone as well, you don't need to take anything out to add RAM." Nope, they're still there, and bigger, hence the inability to shoehorn 3 drives in front of them! "4. Much smaller box. Is Apple following the new iPod minimalist packaging trend across their product line?" That's been there before too, and thank goodness. It's way easier to throw in a taxi to get it home!

There are now 3 USB 2.0 ports on the back, plus one on the front. 2. No more little plug-in stub antennae for Airport & Bluetooth, there is an integrated antenna strip just below the latch for the side door. 3. The pair of removable fans in front of the processors is gone as well, you don't need to take anything out to add RAM. 4. Much smaller box. Is Apple following the new iPod minimalist packaging trend across their product line?

October 19 2005 at 5:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI totally agree with Justin. I just put in a 900gb 3-drive RAID in my Dual 2ghz PowerMac. I would love to move this over to one of the new dual-core G5's but I can see that it's not going to fit in front of the new fan architecture. Makes you wonder if Apple redesigned the CPU compartment on purpose to prevent installing an extra drive bracket. The other funny thing is, the dual-2.7ghz model is still on sale at the Apple store. Looks like I'm sticking with my dual-2ghz G5 until the Intel models come out. Perhaps if Apple offered a great deal on a refurb dual-2.7ghz, I'd go for that.

October 19 2005 at 4:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEveryone commenting on dial-up is missing the point: this means now that there is no integrated FAX, we will have to buy an external FAX machine. Receiving faxes on my computer is a tremendous conveience, because I automatticaly have every FAX I receive in PDF format and do not have to scan and file physical copies.
October 19 2005 at 4:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf you are buying a PowerMac, but are still on dial-up, you should be spending your money on a Uhaul and a security deposit on an apartment out of the boonies.

October 19 2005 at 3:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI also noticed that Apple haven't updated their UK site... at all! How many hours after the event? You'd think that nothing had happened. ... and I wanted to play at making expensive computers :'( lol. actually the only part of the UK site they *have* updated is the store :D
