Ars Technica takes apart the new iPod
Ars Technica have a review up of the new iPod that covers much of the information that we already know about the new iPod, like that it does video, is actually the same width as the last generation iPod (as well as thinner and lighter), and that it only works over USB. They even had a chance to try plugging it into a TV, so make sure you check that section out.
Where the review really got interesting for me, however, was when they started taking the iPod apart, and we get a complete inside view of what components make up this little wonder.

Hi just want to let people know that you can use a cheap radio shack a/v cable with the new ipod ,for some reason apple swapped the yellow and red cables .So the red cable is the video cable and the yellow is audio white is the same.

Go look up the stats on the iPod Linux video capabilities. Here, let me make it easy for you: Uncompressed, preformatted video at 15fps. There is no way in hell Apple could update the iPod photos firmware to allow for realtime H264 encoding. And ask yourself... Would you want it? The photo's screen is lower quality, and could even have problems with ghosting. It has nothing to do with Apple losing a sale. H264 in realtime cannot be done on the old iPods. Period.

October 20 2005 at 9:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply#7 Nick Although the old ipods don't have the broadcom chip, they can still play video. (see ipodlinux) I understand Apple not wanting to release a firmware update for us older ipod owners, as that would loose them a sale of a new one, but seeing as I can't afford a new one, I can still dream about a firmware update.
October 20 2005 at 7:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyarkowi, exactly. why's that necessary again? apple's already been stumbling all over themselves making it known that ipods work with PCs. the tagline is now, "for PC + Mac," instead of the other way around. i suppose i understand this - an ipod user demographic would likely not be too different from a desktop share % of windows v. macs - but why shill for hp laptops on your own site? people with money to buy ipods have expendable income (you're never going to convince me that ipods are inexpensive - a good value? yes. cheap? hardly). people with expendable income browsing apple's latest offering online are also computer purchasers. aren't we gunning for the 'halo effect?' doesn't the optimum mac conversion sequence go something like: itunes (loss leader) --> ipod (introduction to "it just works") --> macintosh hardware (conversion complete)? leaving out the last step by sticking a far-from-fetchingly designed hp laptop on your ipod page seems like bad business, no?

October 20 2005 at 3:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIs anyone else felling a bit put out by the fact that Apple has totally dropped Firewire support for iPod? My Powerbook is only a little over a year old, but it's already feeling obsolete. I can't even buy an upgrade for my laptop so that I'll have USB 2.0, I just have to wait until I got a new computer in about 3 or 4 years. Thanks Apple.
