Leopard to feature completely redesigned Finder
Leopard will be the next major release of Mac OS X (10.5), and it's not scheduled to hit the streets until sometime between the end of 2006 to 2007. According to very early rumors, Leopard may feature a completely new Finder that relies very heavily on Spotlight.Mac OSX Rumors reports that the new Finder, codenamed "Chardonnay," will use meta search technology extensively, including the ability to edit meta-tags in the Finder just as easily as editing ID3Tags in iTunes. Smart folder searches, document previews and more will all be available in Chardonnay.
It's never too early to get the rumor mill operational within the Mac community. It will be interesting to see if any of this pans out, or how it changes during the course of development. Keep your eyes peeled.

#13 is right. check this pic: http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcase/vista_5112_29.jpg It's exactly what's in Vista if you change a few words just like #14 did, only without the joking/sarcasm as from the pic it's already in Vista's Explorer: editing tags, document preview and all. I think this rumour is just that, but finder could do with an update.

Smart folder searches, document previews and more will all be available in Riesling. "Riesling" will be available in the as-yet otherwise unannounced successor to Windows Vista, which is rumoured to be due sometime before the eventual heat death of the universe. Zing!

Feel blessed that while its a rumor and YES it's unconfirmed, that there are people trying to pick away at the bone and find the truth. TUAW is a fine example of the common Mac Mill. If Apple wanted you to know their secrets about anything, I am sure they would tell you. So until I see some noteworthy news from you (or anyone for that matter) take anything with as much salt as you wish but keep your smart ass comments to yourself.
October 21 2005 at 1:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor many versions of OSX now, the Finder has languished and seen next to no real serious progression. This leads me to believe one of two things: either Apple just doesn't give a damn, or they are putting their energy into a real, serious, large update such as the above described. Lord God almight I hope it is the latter. The Finder, as it is now, is just terrible. So under-developed and under-powered. Having a Finder with some serious work put into it, and one that gives the user real power when it comes to metadata, would be heaven. Better metadata support is my #1 desire for 10.5.

I just hope the team doesn't spend too much time drinking their codename instead of getting it right! Meanwhile, the Vista team are working to equal Tiger, but as for Leopard, if it is any good and comes out around the same time or soon after Vista, it could well be called "Leapfrog." ;)
