iTheater to be Released December 23rd
Christmas is coming two days early! A group of Macintosh developers has been working on an open source home theatre media center project called iTheater Mac Media Center. They've announced that their first release candidate will be available on December 23rd of this year. This is exciting; I've been wanting something like this for more than a year. The iTheatre Project will allow you stream video, music, and photos to your entertainment center from any Mac on your home network.
They've set up a blog, a wiki, and a forum for tracking news and feedback and to facilitate collaboration. There's some great information here.

Well, I guess you will have to retract this statement when December 23 rolls around. I know your doubtful, but we got some great stuff happening. You'll see it soon enough, and believe it. ;)

Making a diagram showing how the product might be organized does not make a product. I'll believe it when I see it. Can't believe anyone is even reporting on this. There's nothing there.

I have a whole list of things i want now, none of which will be in any of these products. I have a lot of integration needs, and have not found a great solutions - hardware or software - at a reasonble price. I might be building my own and selling it ;). Anyhow, of note for the HDTV crowd who wants Digital only recording. Cheapest entry point is to buy a TV with an ATSC tuner and 1394 built in. You can also get one from your Cable Company etc and they are required to have a working 1394 port on it [FCC regulation]. Currently all 37" TVs [might have to be wide screens, not sure] are suppose to have the ATSC. Next year, they will have to include it with smaller TV's also. I have seen atleast 1 26" at BestBuy with the tuner built in, but no 1394. Anyhow, get the Tuner and the 1394/firewire/iLink, and you can set your computer up as your PVR. Pretty easy, and that's the cheapest solution I have seen. Best wishes to all of you. Hope i get the time to write my own. Get me a little ObjectiveC programming in and maybe a little income. Of note though guys... current intel processors do not hold up to current PowerPC processors. You can wait, but you will most likely be disappointed. Apple has a knack for picking processors that will not make it to market on time and intel has been performing better than par.

October 27 2005 at 5:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThese guys have no clue how to deal with the press. Took me forever to realize what they f*ck they were really doing that was different and innovative. They certainly don't have Apple's talent in getting to the point.
October 27 2005 at 4:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI looked at both - I will download CS and BS to try on my powerbook tonight. I tried the slightly modified FR on my PB the other day and it works fine (I did not try the DVD though). While I applaud CD and iT's efforts, I just don't see the difference (for me). They don't seem to support TV tuners or FM/AM Tuners yet :-) Of course it is quite early to be commenting on these systems and I would LOVE to see them flurish :D What I would like to see: 1. FM/AM support for appropriate hardware (with Personal Radio Recorder for the shows you miss) 2. TV Tuner compatibility 3. Compatibility with associated DVRs for the aforementioned TV tuners 4. If the DVRs have internet TVGuide capability - integration with it 5. Send-to-Ipod capability (Songs/PodCasts/TV Shows) Dream living room setup Mac Mini (BT + WiFi + external FW 1GB HD + iPod Dock) HDTV Cable + associated elGato hardware FW Audio 5.1 Dolby FM/AM tuner unit AirPort Express Tablet Touch Panel control unit (Or a modified salling clicker on my Life Drive) One of these fine products Droooooooooooool

October 27 2005 at 2:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLooks to have much more functionality than FrontRow - and has the flexibility of an Open Source project as well. As a user, adding in something like EyeTV with DVR or AlchemyTV DVR would make for a killer bundle.

October 27 2005 at 2:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replycenterstage only has the movies part functional. and backstage crashes on me routinely. as far as Front Row, its a little too slow for non-G5s, not to mention it has VERY limited functionality. i'm not saying this will be better or worse, because i honestly don't know. but the fact that they are releasing an RC vs the CenterStage Alpha makes me optimistic
