SmashMyiPod nothing but a scam?
We first wrote about SmashMyiPod back on October 10th, and then posted an update on the 21st, when the site had apparently reached its goal. As you may remember, SmashMyiPod was (supposedly) run by some folks who intended to publicly destroy an iPod purchased with funds donated by readers. The destruction would be videotaped and posted to the site, so that iPod haters everywhere could revel in the cathartic glee. Now, it looks like the entire thing was a scam - a scam that got the webmaster a brand new 5G iPod, courtesy of his readers. More after the jump.[Via Cult of Mac]
While the site claimed, "mission accomplished" on the 21st, they didn't post any video of the actual smashing until today. It's ten minutes long, and the first nine minutes feature the webmaster's purchase of a (brand new, 5G) iPod. He tries to stomp on it in the store, but is escorted out before finishing the job.
Next, he is seen smashing what is clearly a 20GB, 4G iPod in an alley with a hammer. Scam.com says, "Obvious scam." We only hope you didn't give this guy any money.

November 01 2005 at 8:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTHis kid is an idiot. I did watch the video myself. THis kid is just a geek who wants attention who thinks he is smarter then everyone else. Lets look at the facts we know. He raise $500+ dollars through his website that we know of. He showed $400at the beginning of the video and was very smug about how they bought him an ipod...to smash. He bought the $250 Ipod 20gb. There is a screen pause and its not %100 sure the ipod he bought is the one they stomped on. They were retarted in the store and too scared to actually make a statement. So it lookslike these kids pocketed about $200 and could have swapped teh good 20gb ipod with an old broke one. And i wouldnt be suprised if that broken ipodshowed up on ebay and some sucker bought it
November 01 2005 at 1:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply1) It was a 4th gen ipod. 2) The kid was a retard. 3) Just not as retarded as the people who sent him money. 4) The scam is that $400 were donated to him, and he bought a $250 ipod (about $265 after tax) and pocketed the rest of the cash. 5) I appologize to anyone who is mentally retarded for in any way compairing you to a person such as this. 6) The kid couldn't break it himself, he needed a friend to help (aww, isn't that cute?) and finally... 7) Did anyone notice that it wasn't the drop, nor the stomping that smashed the ipod (hence it was not actually destroyed in the store) but that it was the mallet that did it in? Oh yeah, that sounds like a poorly constructed, easily broken product to me. ...idiots...
October 31 2005 at 11:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyScam or not scam. He just jacked the donators $100. 20 Gig iPod 4G would probably cost about less then $300. Donations were worth $400. OWNED!
October 31 2005 at 10:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot to mention the fact that at the beginning of the video it sounds like he says he has collected $400 to spend on an iPod, but only actually spends $243. Him and the donaters are free to do what they want with the money, but the least they could do is spare a thought for the less fortunate, and donate some of that cash, even just a tenner would help.

October 31 2005 at 7:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFrom the site... "Why are you collecting $400, I can get an iPod for much cheaper! 20GB iPod costs $379.00 Canadian Dollars at the Yorkdale Apple Store. Including the 15% sales tax, that comes to $435.85 Canadian Dollars. With an average exchange rate of 0.85:1 that comes to about $370 USD. The extra $30 is meant to cover the Paypal fees, which are rather ridiculous."

October 31 2005 at 7:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe ipod he bought was obviously a 4G 20gb. But when he first starts stomping it, we never see that its the same ipod as he bought. He could have had a dead, broken, out of warranty ipod and switched it out of the view of the camera (purposely) and he just walked away with a new ipod.
October 31 2005 at 7:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, they guy's a moron, but he clearly buys a 4g 20gig iPod. You guys should really watch the video before posting about it, not just rely on what your brother's friend's cousin's uncle said. There's no way you could have watch this video and thought he bough a 5g video iPod.
