Firefox 1.5 G4-optimized Version
Ask and ye shall receive. Shortly after yesterday's post about a G5-optimized version of Firefox 1.5, readers began asking if there was a G4-optimized version. Thanks to Neil Lee, now there is. I haven't tested this yet as I'm away from my G4 right now, but I suspect there to be a reasonable speed increase on my Powerbook. Thanks Neil!Share

I'm running the new build on a ppc7447a (I looked it up using the provided link; 'machine' in Terminal reports ppc7450). Seems to work fine (if no quicker), but the brilliant foXpose plugin barfs which is a shame.

Here is the list: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/index.html When I scanned the list, I thought they were in numerical order and I didn't catch the six or so 7450+ listed. What is odd is that older, slower 12" PB has a higher processor number than newer versions. Maybe the list is incorrect.

December 02 2005 at 1:33 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyInteresting...a 15" 1.0 Ghz PB shows ppc7450 via the 'machine' command in the Terminal. Perhaps this command isn't accurate? It does say in the man page that the command is 'under development'
December 01 2005 at 11:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf you bother to look at the processor list for your powerbook, you'll find that none of them are above 7450 - which (according to the instructions) means you won't get any speed increases. Moral of the story - read the documentation first.
December 01 2005 at 9:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI actually downloaded that build earlier today, but it actually *increased* the CPU usage on my 1GHz Powerbook, though I suspect it may be just a personal issue with my computer, so I think that since Shiira is working just fine for me, I'll stick with it for now. But don't get me wrong, I still love you Firefox, with all my heart.
