Safe sleep not so safe on unsupported machines?

Powerbook newMore evidence that one should always be cautious with hacks: according to this Accelerate Your Macintosh! reader report, using the PatchSleep utility to enable safe-sleep on Matthew's 12-inch 867Mhz PowerBook resulted in overheating and ultimately fan failure on the machine.

Matthew concludes his note of warning, saying, "So, the moral is - be careful with hacks to run software on unsupported hardware. I don't know what the outcome would have been if I hadn't noticed the problem, but it could have been a disaster."

Hi everyone, I was the guy who posted the warning on XLR8. I just want to point out the the fan problem is not a permanent failure - it always came back to life after a restart. As far as I know there's been no damage done, but I count myself lucky!

I've had some heat / CPU usage issues lately and I'm runing the SafeSleep patch on my Late 2005 iBook with 10.4.3. Sometimes the CPU usage hits 100% according to my monitor, the fan comes on, and nothing shows as being a CPU hot in the activity monitor. Going to sleep and resuming solves the problem but it is wierd.

My 12" PowerBook 1.5Ghz machine seems to be doing very well since the hack. I haven't noticed any increase in temperature (which I track with a Dashboard widget) and have successfully used Safe Sleep on more than one occasion. A direct link to the article would have been nice. I'd like some more technical details on what might be causing the issue.

Well i use a 1.5 ghz ibook 12" and have been using safesleep (only lost power once, but worked) Maybe it's because the 1.5ghz 12" has not been changed?
