coconutIdentityCard
From the maker of coconutBattery comes coconutIdentityCard 1.1. This simple app tells you where and when your Mac, and connected iPod, were manufactured. This is great for people, like me, who are too lazy to try and figure out this information from their Mac's serial number. As you can see my 20 inch iMac hails from China and it was made between October 17th and 23rd. It takes time to cram this much computer into such a small space.
When and where was your Mac made?

My iMac G4 was made in Taiwan between 27/05/2002 and 02/06/2002, but it was bought in December (mostly because it had to travel from Taiwan, then to the USA and then here, to Chile)

coconutIdentityCard is showing 'unknown' in both fields. I guess shouldn't have stripped the serial number when I stole that Titanium... But seriously, it doesn't know where and when it was built. Is my Mac is an orphan?

There is another way to get this information. I believe it will show the exact build date and time if you start up while holding Apple+option+v+o, but I could be wrong about that key combo. I did while on the phone with Apple last week, and it appears to be some kind of command line, and I forget if the command for restart was restart, or something else.

Between 9/9/01 and 9/14/01
I think I might need to buy a new one, although my 600mhz iBook is still a workhorse somehow...

I'm surprised, my Powerbook (bought in Tokyo and with a Japanese keyboard) was made in the USA. Not what I would have expected.

I think the time period shown indicates the week in which your Mac was built. At least that's what you get if you look it up in iCal (or any ordinary calendar; Monday being the start of the week) and that's the only reason that makes sense why it takes every Mac seven days to be built ;-P

Unlike everyone so far, my iMac was not built in the US or China, but Ireland (Cork, to be precise) between 20 and 26 June 2005. My iPod was obviously a mate of Kenneth's, as it was built in China between 20 and 26 September 2004.

My iMac G5 Rev A. 1.6 Ghz was built in Shanghai, China in the 49th week of Dec. '04. It was number 5639 off the assembly line (use the web tool provided in the previous link).
But this tool shows mine as ??. You know why? I just got it back from the Apple store today. They had it to swap out the power supply and logic board. If I open 'System Profiler.app' I see that it no longer knows my serial number. I bet something similar is up with you other folks -- repair items don't have an imprinted serial number (wherever it's stored; the boot ROM, I imagine).
