Google Earth OS X beta leaked?

Google Earth betaLooks like those rumors Dave found yesterday of Google Earth finally coming to OS X weren't joking around, as an OS X beta of Google Earth has been leaked - one way or another - to the web.  For those who aren't familiar: Google Earth is a fantastic Windows-only app (at present) that allows you to look at areal, 3D maps of nearly any location on the planet. Google even has a healthy number of metro areas rendered in full 3D goodness - complete with buildings and all. Users can also create driving maps and get directions to and from locations a la Google Maps. There's no mention of OS X beta availability on Google's site, so I'm personally refraining from snagging a copy until I hear of something a little more reliable. While I'm all happy with the security and relatively virus and malware-free OS X experience, I'd prefer to download this from the horse's mouth, rather than some anonymous tip. If you test this out, I'd recommend trying it on a Mac that isn't too crucial to your workflow. With that said, if any of you TUAW readers give it a go, please post your thoughts.

Noah, sounds like maybe you might have some processes running in the background you might want to check out. One of the biggest hits to MACS is low memory & since it looks like you have plenty it should be running pretty good for you. Also I wouldn't exceed the 512x512 mesh size under preferrences.

As for me Earth runs pretty good but not nearly good enough. I suspect that it may not be taking full advantage of Open GL acceleration since it was designed for DirectX. Perhaps Google is going to sort this out & release a version that works well with OpenGL. I have another program I enjoy running on my PowerBook called Stellarium & it blazes in comparison with any PC I run it on (uses OpenGL acceleration). Many programs are hindered not by a slow machine but by poor programming, especially crossplatform applications.

My two cents.

in a small town...

Since MacUpdates pulled the unofficial download link, probably
due to requests from Google --or liability issues-- I'm looking for
an active link to download this unofficial beta. And using Google
to see if I can find a link to someone's homepage or .mac site.

I've heard from an e-friend that this application runs only in Tiger;
is that true? I have Panther 10.3.9 in two Macs & Tiger 10.4.2 in
a newer iBookG4 1.33 12"... and didn't want to update my main
computer to Tiger.

What's the comment about it being available since OSX 10.0? Doubt
if that was a real event! But if it could run in a 1.25GHz iMacG4 with
1024MB RAM and 167GHz bus, under Panther, that'd be OK.

Happy New Year!

I am running Google Earth on a 1GHz G4 iBook (10.4.3), the most intensive I have noticed it is 54% CPU at start up, 75% CPU when flying, reducing to 0% when its there. 100MB memory pretty consistent. Have 640MB RAM, no noticable slowness of the other 10 or so applications I usually run at the same time. Bit of a dodgy mouse movement - erratic is the word. Should be good when it's done, shame I have an essay due that GE is distracting me from!

I downloaded it, tried it, worked perfectly, but I don't really see what the big deal about this program is. I mean, sure its neat to be able to zoom in really close to stuff (I can see my car in my driveway) and plotting trips and such, but you can do that online anyway, and its not even like the program contains all the data, you need a high speed connection to even taste what the program is capable of offering. So while it is good that Google is continuing its development for OSX, I don't really see this program as earth shattering (no pun intended).

I just received my G5 Quad with the GeForce 7800 graphics card... The Google Earth Beta is the first application I've run on it. :)
