Bosco: Remote Desktop on the Cheap

Who likes free stuff? Raise your hands. Hey, you in the back...iFelix...raise your hand. I know you like free stuff.

Now, who gets to help their relatives with computer problems every holiday season?

And who doesn't like to spend hundreds of dollars on Apple Remote Desktop or Timbuktu for remote desktop control?

Luckily, for all of use, the developers of Bosco Screenshare have just released their software as a free product. I've just spent the last ten minutes testing it out and it works quite well. It's not nearly as robust or as fast as Timbuktu or ARD, but that's countered by the fact that it's free. Free! And it's cross-platform, so if your stubborn relatives insist on buying that WinXP box, you can at least remote connect to it now to make sure that its anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are up-to-date.

I do not recommend using this with dial-up connections. Even on a broadband connection, performance wasn't that great, but it works as good as the other freeware solution, VNC. My experience has been that VNC is a lot more difficult to configure and get newbie end-users (hi Mom!) to undersand. Bosco Screenshare's interface makes sense, even for a new user.

It must be noted that though RDC does work well (I use it myself sometimes over a VPN over a GPRS connection) you can't use it to connect to an XP PC running XP Home, it will work with XP Professional (and Server versions of Windows) but won't work with XP Home, which most home PCs now come with.

As for Bosco (hand raised) looks good and I know I might be able to use this in my day job. Thanks

Not to plug my own site, but I just wrote a post the other day about how to get this sort of thing working using free software. Paying money for this just doesn't seem worth it, unless you're getting very fast response times from the paid products, which it sounds like you weren't getting from Bosco. Anyway, here's the How-To: http://thousandrobots.com/blog/archives/2005/11/how_to_control.php Using VNC on the server side (instead of a paid product) isn't complex at all. It's built into the Sharing system preferences panel now (as "Apple Remote Desktop"), and takes all of about 10 seconds to configure.

I second the vote for RDC if you only need to remotely connect to a Windows box. I have even used it in lieu of a KVM because I'm cheap (2 monitors on the mac and none for the PC). My only complaint is that sometimes when I copy and paste text from it to BBEdit or vice versa, it and BBEdit freeze. Also, whether text from Safari comes across as html or text seems random. Otherwise, it is very stable and uses well-defined ports so you can set up ssh port-forwarding. I've used it to connect to WinXP Pro, Win 2000, and Win Server 2003. You can copy the app multiple times and launch multiple instances of it to control lots of different computers, although I need to figure out how to change the app names because a bunch of "Remote Desktop Connection" icons in the dock and app switcher gets confusing.

There is also Chicken of the VNC, which rocks for free as well.

What's wrong with Microsoft's own Remote Desktop For Mac (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient) It's very easy to setup; just click on the remote desktop option on the windows machine. It's way faster than VNC; i know i use it everyday. And what's more it's free, free, free too. I know it's ms ware but really, it actually works like a charm.
