Why the hell does Dave Winer get a press pass for Macworld and we don't?
Dave Winer, known in some circles as the first blogger, the creator of RSS, and the man who invented Podcasting (or was that Adam Curry?) has gotten a press pass to cover Macworld. Hurrah for bloggers, right? Well, not so fast spanky. I'm a blogger, a blogger who covers Apple news obsessively on this very popular Apple blog, and did I get a press pass? Nope. Not only did I not get a press pass, I was rejected because there wasn't 'enough space.'If there's space for Winer, methinks there's space for TUAW. However, lest you think this is all about TUAW (which it is for the most part) we are in good company. According to this article at Applexnet we aren't the only Apple site to be denied media credentials but interestingly enough a few sites that work closely with IDG were able to get creds with no problem.
Is IDG punishing us for our less than flattering coverage of Macworld Boston? I can't say for sure, but IDG if you would like to change your mind and give me a press pass I'm easy to find.

I totally agree with you. How come a simple blogger blogging for himself has more right to cover SJ's keynote in MWSF than multiple bloggers blogging for the whole Apple community? C'mon, we want TUAW doing chatcasts and stuff on January! We want C.K. playing around with the new toys on the next video podcast!

Ah, Kesey, we're 'edgy' you see. We tell it like it is, and what not.

I tend to agree with Kesey. It's immature things like this that keep TUAW from being respected like it should be. I like the work you do here but childish crap like this (and your random loathing of Apple Insider) will keep you from the bigtime.

This kind of post is the reason why you're not accepted to the event.

So, if I am to sense the trend here, we don't get a press pass because we post about the fact that our application was rejected yet someone who didn't get their request in as early as we did, and doesn't cover Apple exclusively, had no problem getting a pass?
Makes sense to me.

Wow, I used to read and recommend TUAW regularly, but I guess I'll have to stop. I don't support unprofessional cry babies.

What's the difference between a site like, say, powerpage.org and TUAW beside, what, the software used for posting updates?
I visit TUAW several times a day and love it as opposed to PP which has really gone down the tubes in the last year or so.

Seems like a legitimate post to me.
You critics say it's not "professional" for TUAW to question IDG's motives for denying a press pass, but it's okay for IDG to enforce petty vendettas against people who don't gush over their lame shows in exchange for some cheap swag?
Ya, okay.

I hate to agree with others here, but TUAW doesn't exactly have the same level of professionalism as many others like John Gruber, DrunkenBatman (no, I don't know his name), Dave Sircusa; heck, even Engadget tends to have professional, yet "edgy" coverage. While TUAW does have some great content, the signal to noise ratio is nowhere near high enough. There are numerous posts here that come off as nothing more than rants; frequently misinformed rants at that.
As for why Dave Winer got invited, I doubt it has anything to do with blogging, and the fact that while he *is* an asinine egomaniac, he has also been heavily involved in the Mac community for years via Userland Frontier (remember that?).

Two points I'd like to make:
1. TUAW is the biggest (only?) Apple blog in the Weblogs, Inc., network...which is a pretty hefty blogging organization. In fact, AOL paid $25 MILLION to purchase it. A little blog named Engadget also happens to be a part of Weblogs, Inc.
2. For those who complain about the writing here...you have to remember that we come to blogs for the human voice of the individuals who post to them. If I wanted a dispassionate perspective, I'd stick to the AP, CNET, Reuters, et al.
Hope to hear your report from Macworld, Scotty...

If anyone wants to get this problem a bit more attention, skip on over to digg, the story is posted here: http://digg.com/apple/The_End_Of_Mac_Media_MacWorld_Access
Personally I think that at least the bigger, legitimate blogs (like TUAW) should be granted press passes.

TUAW is great for learning about Apple News, but I feel that it is too unprofessional to have any sort of credentials. Many times, the posts are cheesy and annoying, but I am just being critical. After all, how can I complain when I am getting something for free?
I just don't feel that TUAW is ready. Nice logo though. Very clever. Took me a while to get.
