PC World on Aperture
PC World's Mac Skeptic takes a look at Aperture and she thinks it is so so. The full screen mode, the light table, and the loupe (the zoom tool) are what caught Rebecca Freed's eye, but the rest of the application didn't do much for her. She is an admitted point and shooter, so Aperture isn't aimed at her, and she does think that art directors and the like will find Aperture a useful addition to their tool box.The post also includes a quote from Aperture's product manager assuring us that it is no Photoshop killer, though I don't think we needed to be told that, especially not after reading some of the reviews.

Dreamweaver's not a quality app -- close, so not a horrible app, but no cigar. It doesn't put out valide code without many tweaks -- typically we don't view dreamweaver users as high end web professionals in the industry unless they have code experience as well -- which then, they usually don't use Dreamweaver. I'd second the motion, though -- there really wasn't a need for her to review an app in an industry she has little experience in.

As for having someone not the target audience doing reviews, yeah, its silly and pointless, but it doesn't necessarily disqualify her. I do a lot of web development in Dreamweaver, and some of my friends who don't know code from Shineola but still appreciate DW and ColdFusion code can see that its a quality app. Besides, she's probably the only one at PC World who will touch a Mac without a Hasmat suit. Don't look at it like a review, look at it like press. And there's no such thing as bad press.

December 14 2005 at 2:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhy would someone review a program that is not aimed at them? if she is a point and shoot-er, why would she even try to use an app that is aimed at professional photographers?
December 14 2005 at 2:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply"She is an admitted point and shooter, so Aperture isn't aimed at her..." Can we just make it a rule that you shouldn't be allowed to publish a review if you're admittedly not in the target audience? "I'm a web developer, and will never use Aperture in my life, but regardless, I'm going to post this review that I think the program is really difficult to use. All I do is shoot pictures, download them to my computer, and maybe crop them and punch up the contrast. Aperture makes this very difficult. I don't even know half the words that appear in the options and menus, therefore Aperture sucks rocks. But I think professions who know what the hell they're doing might like it. I give it 1 and 1/2 stars." Just because you own a computer, can afford the software, can run the installer, and have a weblog does not mean you should be writing reviews. YOU ARE NOT CONTRIBUTING ANYTHING OF SUBSTANCE. If anyone knows of a review of Aperture BY A PHOTOGRAPHER (not an amateur, not a tech writer) please post it here.
