How To: Build your own computer speakers

I am not an audiophile by any means. My iMac is hooked up to some JBL creature speakers which sound just fine to me. However, if you are an audiophile and a do it yourselfer (another group I do not count myself amongst) then has MacMod got the project for you!

With the help of some tools and some raw materials you can create your own HiFi computer speakers and be the envy of computer geeks the world around, or at least have an excuse to use use the word 'tweeter' more than is normally socially acceptable.

Looks like he hired a kitchen cabinet maker because that case is obviously a beveled kitchen cabinet.

...and when you're done building your own speakers, you can test them using FuzzMeasure!

If you want to build low-cost, half-decent computer speakers, I highly recommend researching full-range speakers. With certain 3" and 4" drivers, you can achieve great sound without having to screw around with crossovers and other complicated parts.

Then, you can take on a subwoofer project once you're done... ;)

I agree, this is kind of crap.

Price breakdown:
Woofers = $36.50 x2
Tweeters = $18.35 x2
Capacitors = $1.75 x2
Binding posts = $1.85 x2
Stain = $18.00 (according to his link)

Total = $134.40

Ugly ass box = Priceless

OK, so this "modder" bought some parts, hired a furniture maker to make the enclosures, and screwed together two speakers that appear to be slightly more homely versions of bookshelf speakers available all over for a reasonable price. He even runs them using an audio amp. How are these "computer" speakers, other than the fact that the amp is hooked up to his computer? He gives no cost breakdown, but says it was not much... must be a cheapo furnture maker! Wow! Stay tuned to the next episode, in which he hires someone to build him a desk!
