.Mac services down during keynote

Finally, more interesting rumors related to Tuesday's keynote, and they actually have some incriminating evidence for proof. Sure, everyone's excited for Macintel machines, but we've known about (or have been suspecting) those for how many months now?

This new rumor from hails from MacRumors, foretelling a big update to .Mac arriving on Tuesday. The evidence? It comes straight from the horse's mouth in the form of a service outage warning the morning of the keynote: ".Mac will be undergoing scheduled maintenance from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM PST on 1/10/06. All .Mac services will be affected. We apologize for the inconvenience." Log in to view the actual warning.

I hope all you .Mac'ers have at least a backup email address to use for five hours.

> can we say AJAX?

Doesn't AJAX generally use Microsoft-specific JavaScript?

The problem with JS, as I understand it, is that there are no real standards for it (although there is ECMA script). Consequently, much of this stuff will only work in alternative browsers if their developers have implemented the relevant bits of MS's "standard".

The Safari team *is* working on JavaScript support, now that it has become popular again (c.f. AJAX):

When that's in place, Apple will, presumably, be able to take advantage of it in web applications such as .Mac mail.

I wish that they would update their out of date webmail page to something a bit more competitive with Gmails interface. (can we say AJAX?)

It would also be nice if we could edit/add calendar entries from the web. I would love to be able to add appointments from work to my calendars at home.

Waddaya think the chances are?

Igc90: your .Mac account would not have auto-renewed unless you had given them your credit/debit card information to begin with. oops.

I'll bet Apple increases the monthly bandwidth limit, waddya think?

nox: exclusive live coverage is a great idea!

"The same idea Sirius is doing with Howard Stearn."

Whoever Howard Stearn is, it's not the same idea at all. Howard Stern will -only- be heard by Sirius subscribers, where as this video will be freely available an hour or so after the event.

lgc90: If it's recent, I bet their billing department could help you switch your account over. Doesn't hurt to ask.

It would be nice for Apple to give its .Mac Members an exclusive Stream of the Keynote. The same idea Sirius is doing with Howard Stearn.

Maybe AOL can take a hint from .Mac on what to do with what to do their Weblog purchases. Namely, outages should be a couple hours only, not 4 or 5 days, and, when a service comes back from said outage, it should be IMPROVED - they should test changes on a private server before going live. But I have to give the AOL overlords some credit; they could've made it so the Weblog's websites were screwed up in only one browser, instead they made it so the Weblog sites won't work correctly in any browser. Equality. Gee, thanks guys!

Speaking of .Mac, I just got ass-raped when my account automatically renewed itself even after I distinctly memembered deselecting the "enable auto-renew" checkbox. I wanted a family pack, but now even if i upgrade, I'm pretty sure I still have to wait another year for it to take effect.
