Microsoft offers Flip4Mac for free
Flip4Mac is a plugin for Quicktime that allows you to watch Windows
Media files in Quicktime itself, and that's pretty cool. However, what is even cooler is that this great little plugin
is now available for free thanks to Microsoft. You read that correctly, Microsoft is freely distributing Flip4Mac thought they are only offering the viewer, if you want to create WMV files in Quicktime you'll still need to pony up the cash.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

It worked for me on most sites. Yahoo Movies is not one of those, and their media helper does not seem to work with Quicktime or anything else (gripe). I ended up having to download Media Player 9. I notified flip4mac. I hope it gets fixed soon.

January 14 2006 at 3:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor those who have QT v 7.0.4, there is an update to the Flip4Mac WMV products available at http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm
Also, if you purchased the previous version of the Player, check your email. You should have received a special offer from us (we wouldn't make something free and then leave you guys hanging). If you don't have the email, let us know.

Wow. I can't believe no one has mentioned how mysterious this is....
>>a crappy upgrade of MSN messenger that only added business support and a new skin
>>support for IE for mac ends...as if it had ever really been there, and now
>> Microsoft forgoes updating their application and hawks some piddly hack to play their native format in non-MS surroundings.
>> Even at Macworld, the MS rep for Office said they're officially committed to supporting office for mac for the next five years. Only five?
Am I the only one seeing a conspiracy here? Why is MS pulling away from Mac? I have two possible reasons; I'd like to hear others chime in:
1. End of the cold war. The wall is down; Apple and MS run on the same chip from today. There's not a battle there anymore...MS is looking to new fronts; namely, Google and web applications.
2. Calm before the storm. Less likely, but possible. Pulling all things in before unleashing something completely new and powerful. Like a regrouping retreat.
Anyone else finding this interesting?
QT crashes when stopping or closing a video here too.
January 12 2006 at 2:57 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis doesn't work for me. When i try to oen a .WMV file a popup says:
"QuickTime cannot open the file.
It is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)"

Looks like i'll be staying with WMP...
Guilhas, the same thing is happening to me too! Howcome more people are not complaining about it or is it just a bug for certain people?

Works ok until you stop a wmv file, that's when QT crashes!!!
(10.3.9 + QT 7.0.4)
actually, if you now go to Flip4Mac's site, you can get the free download. they have a new version in their lineup--a $30 version that only imports. the $50 version both imports and exports WMV.
