Microsoft offers Flip4Mac for free
Flip4Mac is a plugin for Quicktime that allows you to watch Windows
Media files in Quicktime itself, and that's pretty cool. However, what is even cooler is that this great little plugin
is now available for free thanks to Microsoft. You read that correctly, Microsoft is freely distributing Flip4Mac thought they are only offering the viewer, if you want to create WMV files in Quicktime you'll still need to pony up the cash.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

" if you want to create WMV files in Quicktime you'll still need to pony up the cash."
Well, luckily there is no legitimate reason to want to encode WMA or WMV, so we're all good o/

Very cool, I'll grab it tonight. The only thing worse than Windows Media Player on the Mac is RealPlayer anywhere! ;-)

Wow. Now everyone can screw up their WindowsMedia settings for free!
To be fair, I couldn't be bothered to fiddle with it. I probably could have gotten it to work if I had worked on it a while.

Currently is not working with QT 7.0.4. TeleStream (who make Flip4Mac) is aware of this issue.

For what it's worth, you also need to pony up the money if you want to export WMV to any other format; the free plugin only does playing, not transcoding.

Working very well on 10.4.4 with QT 7.0.4!

Last I checked Microsoft does not make flip4mac. They just provided a download on its website. If you would bother to go to their website you would see that they are offering it free, not microsoft.
Sucks too, i just bought it a while back! Oh well...
Still kicks ass. the new version lets you save movies in webpages just like qt.

This crashes Safari every time I try to play a .wmv within the browser.
Also, out of curiosity, does anyone know why Apple have provided a Quicktime 7.0.1 reinstaller?

#2, wm10 isn't a codec. it's just the latest player (for windows). windows media 9 is the latest encoder series.

actually, if you now go to Flip4Mac's site, you can get the free download. they have a new version in their lineup--a $30 version that only imports. the $50 version both imports and exports WMV.

Nice piece of sh..!
Works ok until you stop a wmv file, that's when QT crashes!!!
(10.3.9 + QT 7.0.4)

Guilhas, the same thing is happening to me too! Howcome more people are not complaining about it or is it just a bug for certain people?

This doesn't work for me. When i try to oen a .WMV file a popup says:
"QuickTime cannot open the file.
It is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)"

Looks like i'll be staying with WMP...
