Is Steve's "one more thing" yet to come?
Leander at the Cult of Mac blog has been feeling like Steve's keynote
from this past Tuesday just didn't have the polish or energy that Macworld keynotes typically do. He was discussing
this with a friend recently who, he says, is very much "in" at Apple, when his friend had something quite
interesting to say. Namely, that "key products" had to be omitted from the keynote due to
"supply issues." Now, this is rumor, of course, so do with it what you will. Leander writes:"'They can't get enough Core Duo (chips),' said my source. He also said that if he were me, he probably wouldn't order one of the new MacBook Pros. I asked if there would be MacBook replacements for the 17-inch and 12-inch PowerBooks, but he said, 'Oh, it's much cooler than that. Much cooler.'"
Here we go again. So, what didn't we get to see and when wiill it be released? Let the baseless conjectures begin!

I had the same feeling when, at the end of the keynote, he said "if you want a new macbook in february, I suggest you order it now".
They want people to commit to these new computers before they announce the uber-cool ones.
They were pushing the iMac G5's with the built in webcam the same way. Now we know why.
Am I wrong in thinking this?

I was surprised that the MacBook Pro 15" didnt have svideo out, so maybe its not completly tied down yet.

Intel having chip supply issues? Please, give me a break! That would work with IBM but it's not the case.

This is one of the dumbest article that you have wrote, No offense, but even you knew this stunk, when you wrote at the end of your statement, LET THE CRAP BEGIN, why bother.

#1, "if you want a new macbook in february, I suggest you order it now" translated from Distorted-Reality to English means: don't order a MacBook Pro. I would hold until most of the machines get Intel chips.
What doesn't make sense to me is why they were announcing a Pro laptop in a consumer related event. Anyone else agrees?

Well, I had the same feeling only after reading your chatcast... have only watched half the keynote so far... but, my 2 cents are:
- the MacBooks were released because the Powerbook line was in dire need of a refresh, but, I think the real MacBook Pro will be released soon, where it will be thinner as rumored before
- also an impooooooortant omission was the MacMini... it wasn't even mentioned.... so I do think Steve has something up his sleeve...
- and he needs to utilize the momentum Apple has with video... I am still waiting for videoquality and offering to be bumped up....

George and coalxman... does not need to be the intel supply issue, but maybe they didnt manage to finish designs on some other parts...

Definitely feel that Steve's keynote wasn't up to par. I have been preparing for a massive presentation and always like to watch Steve as 'inspiration' on timing, smoothness etc. (yes - this does make me a bit strange, but trust me it really works). I've watched almost all of his keynotes many times and this is the first where he has stumbled a couple of times on the charts and even made a mistake as to which chart is coming next... classic lack of preparation which you would never expect from steve!?!?

After (finally) watching the keynote myself, I have to say: Steve spent a lot of time reading what he had to say. He's usually got the vast majority of his keynote down pat. He didn't seem entirely comfortable during the iLife demos, saying "uh" a lot and so on. When a couple of the pictures didn't fit on the demo calendar, I was surprised.
You could interpret it as Steve giving a revised address that he had little time to rehearse. Or not.

I was very surprised not to see some content in addition to the ABC/ESPN stuff that had already been announced and the "SNL" sketches that went online Tuesday. In particular, the ABC/ESPN stuff was announced the week before. Why not save it until Macworld?
I think Apple is holding back something. CBS, Fox, Warner and Paramount are all out there, and all of them are talking about content delivery.
I expected we would see "24," "American Idol," and "Scrubs" because the season premieres were all so close to Macworld, but I was WRONG!

Does anyone rememebr that the man just had pancreatic cancer...anyone ever tried to recover form major operations might give him a break about his delivery style changing

Alan Andrews #12 - That was a while ago. Steve has given many great presentations since recovering from his operation.

Steve was obviously not feeling well. As the keynote wore on, his coughing increased dramatically.
For all we know, he may have been fighting the flu and running a 102 temp. Shocking as this may be, even his Steveness is not imune to the common cold.

I think it almost makes sense.....
They're buying time.... it's gonna take awhile to make the transition, and the type of people most likely to buy an iMac or Powerbook aren't going to notice the lack of widespread universal binaries. Nobody's going to buy a powermac (g5 line) if there's no software for it...
I just pray that developers don't move to x86-only releases for a few more years
Oh. And for supply issues, it makes perfect sense. When a chip initially launches, they yields are almost always disappointingly low. Even for intel and AMD. The duo is a relatively new chip if I recall correctly...
The one glaring omission from the keynote (I was almost certain it was going to happen) was a bluetooth mighty mouse. Honestly, what's that thing doing with a cord on it?

What? We're still waiting for the real "one more thing" because he only pipped his own Intel timetable by six months, and in both desktop and portables? Come on, kids! There'll always be "one more more thing", but don't fool yourself next time that it was a missed launch from MWSF06.

Alan #12. Ouch, that hurt, but I don't think that is the reason... It's not a delivery style change, it looks like unfamilarity.
Not sure if the special event for the iPod Video is still up, but if it is check him out there - word perfect to each and every click.
Also, I don't think this is just a steve jobs thing. If you watched the launch of the iMac G5 from Phil Schiller in Paris while Steve was ill (I was there), that was absolutely perfect too. These guys walk from spot to spot on the stage - they are completely and utterly rehearsed, right down to the way they deal with unexpected software failure (remember the quick switchover at WWDC?) But this time it felt unrehearsed. That's all... could be nothing, but surely it's unusual for Steve Jobs... Steve Jobs, one of the best "business presenters" on the planet and definitely the best in the US - not someone who normally says "um"...!!

A couple of things to consider.
1. I live in LA and there is a lovely radio station named KCRW, they often give away apple computers as a part of their fund raising. They are saying one of the prizes for the current fund raising round is a new apple product that is so new they can't tell us what it is. I thought this might change after macworld, but it did not. In the past they have offered unannounced apple products like the mini, but as soon as apple announced the mini, they told us that the secret suprise was a mini. As I said they have not done that yet.
2. April is NAB, This is where apple traditionally releases updates of it's Final Cut bundle. it's just a few months away, and would be an entirely appropriate place to announce the new generation of "pro" machines. I think Steve mentioned something about pro apps being universal by March in the key note.

Anyone notice Steve appeared to be fighting off a cough/cold? That could be a potential reason for the stumbles. Anyone ever try to give a presentation under the effect of an OTC cold medicine? "Um's" are to be expected...were lucky he didn't doze off during the Aperture video.
Cheers,
hughdogg
P.S. No doubt something else cool is coming. Most likely on or abouts April 1.
