Forty-Two DVDVX Plus v3.0 = movie encoding heaven

Apps that convert video for portable devices just keep getting smarter, and Forty-Two DVDVX Plus v3.0 is a prime example. Recently updated to version 3, I think this just might be the perfect tool for the job, whether you're rolling with a 5G iPod, a PSP, a Nokia series 60 phone or a handful of other devices. They main feature that makes Forty-Two DVDVX Plus (could that name get a little shorter, please?) so appealing in my eyes is that, on top of encoding for all these different devices, it also handles batch encoding of both movies files and individual chapters from a DVD. But wait, there's more: its UI has that easy-to-use "inspired by iLife" feel to it, and it offers a bunch of other goodies like automatically adding  files to the iTunes library and Automator actions, as well as a choice of format, quality, resolution and more.

I'm encoding some stuff into H.264 with the demo right now, but just from playing with it I'm really impressed. This should definitely give both iSquint and that Automator action I found earlier a run for their money - which, of course, is the only ding here: Forty-Two DVDVX Plus will set you back a cool $19.99 (upgrades are only $9.99). But if you're serious about all this video on the go stuff and are looking for one app to encode everything from local files to DVD folders, chapters and DVD's themselves - Forty-Two DVDVX Plus just might be the app for you.

Kai, I bought it and so far so good. I have yet to try the queing because lack of time when I purchased it last night but that is the feature I am most eager to try.

Kai, I appreciate your candor. I have tried iPSP about every 3 months since the software came out. I even vocally complained in March of last year about how you're making money based on free toolsets. And the software has often failed to perform as described (I should add that I don't fall into the NetFlix ripping category, but into a niche that your product admittedly is not aimed at: video professionals).

That said, it's made strides, and there are plenty of people out there that swear by it. I'll freely and frankly admit that I am still disappointed with all commercial efforts made on the media management front for the PSP, but 42 3.0 looks like a firm step in the right direction. Keep up the hard work, and you'll eventually convert us in the Noise crowd over to the Signal's team. Reliable H.264 full-screen on the PSP would be a game breaker. ;)

About Reviews:

Best we can say is try if for yourself; there is a LOT of "noise" in the Signal-to-Noise ratio on places like VT...lot of bones to pick and axes to grind that have very little relevance to the functionality of our software.

Typical criticsms:

"Doesn't covert a video I have...doesn't 'work'"

"Doesn't work with my weird rip of a DVD I'm stealing that I gotta return to Netflix TODAY - this app sucks."

"Should be free because it doesn't its 'just a GUI wrapper'"...sorta the way a large chunk of OSX could be described, so this one is always a head-scratcher...

Basically, we look at it like this:

If you want an applescript app that is largely untested, or some bloated thing that makes YOU do 90% of the work, or something that looks and works like a Windows port, if you HATE the way iApps are...then you should *avoid our apps* with the core of your being. If having a real cocoa app that takes cutting edge OS X features and plops them in yer lap is *anathema* to you...run away.

Now, if OTOH, these are the kinds of things that appeal to you...give it a shot.

Personally, I don't use anything else :)

Cool program, cool price. It does a lot of devices, and other things are 20 bucks and just do one. Having bleach on there is one of the coolest things.

Scott, the phrase wasn't meant to be a call for everything to be free. It was simply meant to be used to compare the app to the feature set of some of its free alternatives, which inevitably exist. Some people make do with free apps, some people find value in feature sets that retail applications offer and they buy it. Sorry if you took offense, but I didn't mean the phrase to be a complaint about cost. I hope this clears things up.

Has anyone else demoed or bought and tried this? I was able to successfully use it on a DVD last night and I was about to buy it but I checked for reviews online and found that many many people swore against it saying it doesn't work correctly. Has anyone here encountered this problem?

Anyone else get this to work as a DEMO? It keeps encountering a problem and wants to quit.....

It sounds very cool. Now, How about software that does the REVERSE? Converts those iPod vids to regular video that I can burn on a dvd and play on my big screen tv?

I would buy all the eps of Lost and Desperate Housewives (we do NOT have a viewable abc affiliate out here in the wilds of Wyoming nor can we get it on our DishTV ... the "local" affiliate over in Rapid City says they're bound by law and can't give us a release. Oh sorry that's another rant altogether).

So if someone knows how I can do this I'd appreciate a heads up!

Uh, Malfoy,

That "it's just a phrase" could be use a little more responsibly, dontcha think? I mean, phrases are what blogging is about, no? You take one phrase, put it together with another one and before you know it, you have a sentence, a paragraph, etc. All used to describe a product, good or bad.

I'm just sick and tired about people complaining about the cost of stuff. Vote with your dollars. If you like it buy it, if you don't, pass on it. But using your blog to lobby people to adjust prices because you're a poor college student is kinda low.

Clue, everything isn't free. Software is not easy to make. And "setting someone back a cool $19.99" isn't a phrase - it's an attempt to point out the fact that it's not free and the insuination it's too expensive is well, stupid. Kind of like C.K whining about the apple phone message thing the other day. All relative right?
