1GB iPod nano for $149

I don't know yet if this is the only reason the Apple Store was down earlier today, but in any case, they've just announced a new 1GB iPod nano for $149 and the iPod shuffle now starts at $69 for the 512MB model and $99 for the 1GB model. I would have preferred a $99 1GB iPod nano and that they just trash the 1GB shuffle, but, whatever...

Yeah, it seems really weird to have two 1GB models, priced at 99 and 149. Also, though I'm always for new iPod models, I prefer if the capacity goes *up*, not down.

The bigger story here is that new iPod shuffles start at just $69. At that price, they're affordable by everybody. Even the cheapest, crappiest flash players can't compete with Apple at this price range, given the benefits of the shuffle. Good thing Dell just decided to focus solely on flash-based players! Rhymes with ditty indeed.

That was pretty unexpected ... well expected but out of the blue.

This could be worthwhile if they use the shuffle audio chip instead of the nano audio chip and bigger battery. Otherwise it is just a more expensive, shorter battery life, worse sounding, 1 gig player with a screen and non-tactile controls.

Well it's been talked about a bit over the past month or so. It's on ThinkSecret at the moment. I use a 512MB iPod shuffle for jogging and when my 5G 60GB is occupied, I'm thinking I might get a 1GB nano for this now, but I don't think I could say goodbye to my shuffle and else I'm being excessive!

Education discount....sweet...
I just bought a Razr too. I'm going to duct tape them together and finally have the iPod phone I've always wanted.

Hmm...I'm done with work, but my last paycheck comes on the 17th. It should be about 150 dollars considering it was toward the end of the pay period anway...
Hello nano! Welcome to the family!

I would have preferred a $10 100GB full size iPod, but, whatever.
Also a magic wand and a PONY!

I think this means the end of the shuffle in the very near future, which is too bad, because I really like having an iPod to listen to without worrying about scratches.

"I would have preferred a $99 1GB iPod nano"
I think that's the dumbest statement I've seen in a TUAW post.
Also, I'm not sure the Shuffle will be killed. The 512 Mb Shuffle is $80 cheaper than the 1Gb Nano. And's there's definitely people out there who choose smaller and cheaper in preference to having a screen.

Nice try Apple. but it's over-priced this side of the Atlantic - would you pay 109 when for 30 more you could double the memory and actually carry some photos with the music? A Nano for 99 would be the one that would sell.
Story of the day: A Shuffle for under 50 quid. That's more like it Apple!

I should clarify: I mean the death of the shuffle as we know it. I think they will either revamp the shuffle (but still no screen, maybe colors or something), or kill it off entirely.
