More iPod video mock-ups surface

Adding more fuel to the rumor-fire that is the new video iPod ThinkSecret rumored yesterday, someone calling themselves "bud62" (probably not affiliated with Apple in any way) posted new mock-up images today.
All I have to say is that this is a very sexy looking prototype! Even if this doesn't end up being a new iPod, it definitely should in my book.

Whether or not THIS is a fake (I assume it is), the idea itself seems fairly well grounded. From Apple's Patent:
[0017] The invention relates, in one embodiment, to a user interface method. The method includes displaying a group of media items. The method also includes detecting a touch over the group of media items that are displayed. The method further includes activating a virtual scroll wheel when a touch is detected over the displayed media items. The activation of the virtual scroll wheel includes displaying and enabling the functionality of the virtual scroll wheel, the virtual scroll wheel providing a touch region where a user swirls their finger in order to traverse through the group of media items. The method additionally includes determining if a touch event is performed relative to the touch region of the virtual scroll wheel. Moreover, the method includes scrolling through the group of media items when a scrolling touch event is performed.

JKrahn, it says it's a mockup .. it's def. fake.
But I'd love a video iPod like this ... although they wouldn't release a widescreen iPod with only TV Shows in iTMS. Apple would have to announce movies for download if they wanted to release a widescreen iPod.
I'd love to take this thing (and some ripped DVDs) along with me to wait for class.

It seems like it would be very scratch-able though

In 3 Months since the last lot of iPods how have things progressed in terms of battery life - I heard only 2 straight hours from video playback on the Video iPod. If that's true, I'll wait a revision or two.
This mockup is just what I imagined. I can't wait to upgrade my 3G Mono.

Wouldn't the screen just get totally smudgy and scratched? How would that be fun to watch? I'd prefer the buttons on the side, maybe, with a full screen.

This could be what the "You've got the golden ticket" invite was talking about. Golden Ticket hints at Movies.

This is what the Apple enthusiast community has come to:
1. Fawning over new iPods.
2. Endless speculation about unreleased iPods.
It is kind of surreal.

Look at the dimensions of the 5g video ipod. If they were to release an ipod like the one above, it is likely that apple would try to use the same form factor as the 5g ipod in terms of dimensions. The 5g ipod is 2.4" x 4.1".
The HDTV width to height ratio is 16x9 or in other words 1.78 width to height ratio (16/9 ~ 1.78). Now look at the 5g ipod ratio: 4.1/2.4 ~ 1.71 width to height, assuming a uniform border around screen. This means that if apple wanted to use the 16x9 ratio (a no brainer), all they would need to do is lengthen the ipod by .168" horizontally or make the top and bottom borders of the screen .045x wider than the left and right borders to accomidate the 16x9 ratio in the current form factor. Basically, the numbers are very close and a 16x9 screen in the ipod looks almost planned given the current form factor.
Also, there are different materials Apple could use on the face of the ipod to resist scratching while maintaining the touch screen capabilities. They've just been using cheap plastics in the models so far.

Ahh yes, a movie and a million finger prints. How on earth would you keep the screen clear?

"Surreal," Rob? This longtime Apple enthusiast is a fairly down to earth person. Still, having had all of the full-size iPods, I can't help but speculate about what might come next. Think about it. We were satisfied with original iPods back then, but few of us would trade a 5g iPod for one of them. We'll want the next innovation, too.
(Focused on Rob's name while browsing the comments. One of the things my video iPod has resulted in is watching "Forever Knight" downloads.)

This would be interesting if they could make it a touch screen with a stylus and have an OS that would let you access files and view them. I wouldnt buy it if it just played movies and music (the 5g is fine for that), but if it was a "tablet" Mac for your pocket, now you talkin.

How are you suposed to see anything if you have to put your hand in front of the screen to use the clickwheel? I don't think Apple will design an iPod like this.

For chrissakes, there is no excuse for these fakers not to know by now that the Apple font is Lucida Grande. Using Franklin Gothic for the screenshots and whatnot is a dead giveaway.
To spend all that time to make a halfway convincing fake and not nail the details is just embarrassing.

I do not see why Apple would release a design like this. How are you supposed to hold it? If you were to keep the screen the way it is displayed in the picture, then you're asking for some wrist agitation. It would not fit "naturally" in the hand. This is not how Apple designs their products.

I'm doubtful that the fingerprints-on-screen navigation will come true, but they have to get a large screen sooner or later. Here's my idea for a "true" video iPod:

1. Touchscreen iPod.
2. You've seen the new Nintendo DS Lite?
3. Will Apple and Nintendo merge, or just continue
their bizarre parallel evolution?

There is no need to have a touch sensitive screen when you can have a motion sensitve iPod.
You hold the iPod in your hand, press a button on the side, the scroll wheel and menu is displayed and the motion control is enabled. Then you get to choose by tilting the iPod. When you've come to the command you want, you just release the button and voil.
I suppose it could have a sliding button. Up/yes - down/no/retract.
