Libraries loaning out iPods and cataloging iTunes

Playlist's Mathew Honan has penned an interesting article about more and more libraries turning to iTunes and iPods for a number of reasons. While this topic has been covered fairly heavily, Mathew's article takes a new angle: DRM.

You see, libraries have to serve two masters: the public that wants information, and the content providers who don't like the idea of having a CD in a library where hundreds of people can use the same CD (without having to buy a copy themselves).

Worth a look, if you are at all interested in DRM or the future of libraries.

Jazz, Trevor. Jazz. About 15 percent of the jazz content in my iTunes library came from library CDs. Since most people are not jazz aware, you can get good quality or even new jazz CDs. But, I wouldn't let the run-of-the-mill library CD near a comparatively new computer.

Actually, this article is misleading. The majority of libraries that loan MP3 players or allow digital downloads go with Windows DRM and players.

So, the library is going to RIP all the music, organize it AND put it in a convenient package for me to transport home.

WOW! Talk about your modern conveniences. What am I going to do with all the time they are saving me?

Okay.... they are gonna loan out ipods?

This is supposed to stop people from listening to the the music without paying?

besides its not like you can't get the AAC off of ipods Windows users have Ephpod and we have Senuti. And everyone can do it from the command line.

Just seems pointless- besides the library only has that nasty pop music anyhow- never anything really good like techno or indie.

I love how paranoid the recording industry is. Have they ever tried playing a CD from a library? It's been handled by hundreds of people who don't care about it because it's not their own property. It's scratched and dinged and the jewel case has been smashed to bits.
