Apple removing the iTunes phone 100 song cap?

I can neither confirm nor deny the legitimacy of this, but TUAW reader Jake sent us a tip with an iTMS screenshot detailing an upcoming possibility of removing the 100 song cap on iTunes phones. From the screenshot it looks like Apple might soon offer the ability to purchase what I would assume to be a software upgrade to remove the software-based 100 song cap on the phone.

Jake claims to have followed a number of code snippets he found in the latest iTunes update, version 6.0.3. Check out his post for the full details on the steps he took, and check out the actual page in the iTMS. For now, however, I don't know anyone with a ROKR who could take this one step further. If anyone can confirm this page in the iTMS is real, is brave enough to plug their ROKR in and click OK, feel free to sound off. If this is true, it could be a sign that Apple and Motorola are finally listening to the market and removing a silly limitation that should never have existed in the first place. One can only hope.

Just found out that the upgrade is mainly for non-US users who have phones that have song limits as low as 25. The 100 song cap remains intact, but it'll probably only a matter of time before we see upgrades past the 100 songs...WAHOO!

Yeah when I upgraded iTunes and opened it again it popped up that screen at me, even though I have never plugged in an iTunes phone.

It all makes sense now. The Cingular marketing materials for the ROKR and SLVR do mention that these phone comes upgraded with a 512MB memory card. When I connected my phone to iTunes this morning and clicked okay, I received a messgae that the phone is already upgraded. Thus, this is truly only relevant for the foreign markets where this is a smaller than 100 song cap... until Apple decideds to have mercy on us in the US and raise the cap beyond 100 songs.

So did it take off the 100 songs cap or not? if it doesn't take the cap off what exactly does it do?

Since Apple did not release a version in Brazilian Portuguese, I've been translating iTunes since version 5. The upgrade thing has been on iTunes since version 5, buried inside the program, so that was Apple's plan from the beggining.

Now all they've got to do is release iTunes for Symbian, then I can use it on my Nokia and not have to buy one of those awful Motorola phones!

iTunes software on the phone is still at version 1.0 - probably don't have the update ready to roll out just yet.

When I connected my ROKR via USB cable a dialog box appeared saying 'there's a software update' available message. Then says I successfully upgraded the phone. Still has a 100 song limit.
