MacMerc reviews the RadTech BT500 Mini Mouse

I think of RadTech as the Sharper Image of Mac gear, they have lots of cool stuff that I would like, but nothing that I have actually bought for myself. The BT500 Mini Mouse just might change that.

Rick Yaeger reviewed it for MacMerc, and he really liked it. The construction was solid, the tracking very good, and the software more than capable.

It come in Blue for $54.95 and Silver for $55.95.

I got the Logitech V270 BT mouse several weeks ago and it's great. Still on initial batteries (turn it off when not using) and it doesn't crash OS X, no sleep issues. I'm recommending it.

GillyGill,
I have a sweet BT mini-mouse made by Think Outside....but I am tempted to call it a shrew since it eats twice its body-weight of batteries in a week if I use it regularly. Do you (or anyone else) know where to get rechargable AAAs that are 1.5v and not the common 1.2v rechargables that stores generally sell? Will the RadTech mouse run on two 1.2v rechargables?

The new RadTech mouse will be a rechargeable mouse with fast charge circuits, however it can still use conventional batteries if required. As far as I can tell it will also have a new bluetooth module that is better than the current one.

umijin - I agree at the state of bluetooth mice, I have been watching for one for a while but they all seem over-priced.

I've got the new Logitech V270 Bluetooth laptop mouse and I'm very happy with it.
Now if only OSX wouldn't crash each time it wakes up from safe sleep if didn't completely disable (no, just disconnecting the mouse doesn't help) bluetooth beforehand...

Hello!

It's not made by RadTech, just repackaged and sold by them. This thing has been out for more than a year, and comes from Taiwan. You can also get the same mouse (different colors) from BlueTake with the same model number.

As far as being a 'really well made mouse' - no it's not. It's adequate, but the plastic body is rather cheap and cover keeps popping off. The tracking is so-so, and really variable on some surfaces. The battery drain is really very fast, as mentioned above. But it is over-priced, as is every BT accessory.

The thing that makes this mouse 'good' is that there aren't any other adequate bluetooth mice out there. Ratech's, errr, BlueTake's BT510 is larger but has extraordinarily poor tracking. I've compared both directly - it sucks. But there aren't really other options out there, at least in Japan. I see a few BT mice advertised in the US, but they aren't available here. And Apple hasn't replace their old BT mouse either... what gives?

Eddie Sowden posted a comment that Radtech is about to release a new bluetooth mouse in a month. Can't find that info on their website.

Eddie - do you have any details? I was about to jump and buy the one they have out now but am holding off in case the next version has better features.

Thanks.

I have had one of these for about 9 months and let me assure you that this is a really well made mouse. I've dropped it quite a bit but each time I just pick up the mouse and the battery cover if it comes off and put it back together and it's fine.

But just one small caveat about the mouse is the batteries, I recommend that you get a battery charger and rechargeable batteries, I would play WoW for 4 or 5 hours a night and I would end up putting new batteries in every other day.

Other than that its a really good buy and the mouse is just the right size not too big and not too small.

I've been happily using one of these for at least a year now (the blue one). As far as the logo goes, I'm not sure about now, but when I bought mine it was actually a clear sticker that you could peel off very easily.

that radtech logo on the mouse looks really tacky. that alone is a deal breaker for me

It might be worth noting that RadTech are about to release a new bluetooth mouse. It is set to be released before the end of the month.
So I would hold of buying for a short bit.
