Linux on Intel iMacs

The Mactel-Linux project experienced some success this week when they got a copy of Gentoo Linux to boot on an Intel-based iMac. We know, Linux on Apple hardware isn't news (Yellow Dog or Ubuntu, anyone?), but it's still nice to reward the efforts of the seemingly tireless Linux community. They've got a long way to go, of course. Baby steps.

Adrian,
X is used to refer to the X window manager that can be run on a lot of different operating systems - but is primarily known for it's use in *nix systems like Linux.
The X in OS X does not imply any relation to the X window manager. It's used to denote the 10th version of the Mac OS. Apple does offer a download of X11 for the Mac for use with ports of *nix apps like GIMP, but it is not a part of the operating system by default.
For all intents and purposes, Linux and OS X are as different as OS X and Windows. There have a lot in common but they are not interchangable.
Hope that answers your question.

Adrian vG,

I don't understand your question. X runs on lots of things. Linux kernels, Unix kernels, Windows, Mach kernels.

Hey... does this mean that vmware can be run on the iMac, and hence Windows? A roundabout way to dual booting windows, but it should work, and for most things essentially native speed.
