Apple beginning to phase out the 15" PowerBook?

TUAW has received a tip that points to the possibility that Apple could already be phasing out the 15" PowerBook. The tipster, whom we'll call Bob for anonymity's sake, manages an Apple B2B program for a U.S. institute. Recently, Bob noticed that, as you see in our screenshot, the 15" PowerBook has disappeared from their program's offerings. After Bob verified this disappearance with his Apple sales rep, the rep also (reportedly) explained that it would slowly begin disappearing from other catalogs as well.

As with all claims like this, TUAW can neither confirm nor deny their validity. If this is true, however, it could force some uneasy decisions for those who had their eye on picking up a pro 15" portable from Apple, as we've already found out that some pro apps, such as Adobe's Creative Suite and After Effects, won't be Intel-ready until at least 2007.

VERY UNHAPPY!!! 12" is too small for me. 17" is too big. 15" (my current G4 powerbook) is just right! I want an Intel-based one, but want to wait a little longer before springing for one, since it's only been about a year and a half with my current one! WHY APPLE, WHY?!?

Umm... I am confused. The eMac has been gone for quite some time now, so why is it in the screenshot? When you go to the Apple website, the 15" is still there and very much for sale... so what gives? I am sure they will still be sold until people are content with the Intel switch, just as they are continuing to sell the Power PCs. Eventually it will all be phased out, but as for now it is all up for grabs.

I'll second (or third, or whatever) all of the confirmations. On the UCF/Apple page all mentions of the 15" Powerbook have been removed.

first ime i've posted, so don't jump on me. but before i became i mac user i never associated powerbook w/ the power pc chip. i thought powerbook just meant this laptop has all the power you need. i think thats what most non-apple people think too. so anyway, i like the name powerbook better. but at least they added pro to the end of macbook. macbook by itself whoud sound aweful.

Re: Comment #28

Regardless of whether or not it initally had a PowerPC processor, there's no doubt that the name "Power"book came to be associated with PowerPC.

Diva,

It's not that I doubt the 15 is a solid alternative, as much as the fact that I seldom see them in public, when compared to my sightings of the 12 & 17.

Aaron Hoffman, I was stating that the only names of notebooks you suggested that were similar to iPod names were the plain MacBook (as in just iPod) and also iPod mini (MacBook mini).

I wouldn't have thought that the act of adding a second name to an existing product to denote a modification would be classified as a system unique to the iPod, as it's happened with many other products (Gameboys, etc.)

That said, I still do not agree with you and do not think that they will be tacking on second names to their notebooks. I think the addition of "pro" was necessary with the change from PowerBook to MacBook so that the notebook will continue to be indentified with professional usage. However, the iBook will remain the iBook.

The "Power" in PowerBook has nothing to do with the "Power" in PowerPC. They were called PowerBooks when they debuted in the early ninties with Motorola 680x0 processors.

On the Canadian educational store, the 15" PowerBook G4 is still pictured and available for order. The shipping time on it, however, is 1-3 days compared to 24 hours for both 12" and 17" PBG4s.
