iPod video "spy shot" a fake
Well, well, looky here: Turns out that widely-distributed image of the
supposed 6G "true video" iPod was a total and utter f-a-k-e fake. MacRumors points to this video
(YouTube) that documents the creation of the original image, and this blog
post right here shows why the second pic is also a
fake. That's too bad. I really wanted one of those.
Update: Readers are posting links to various sources (link, link) that point out discrepancies in the video vs. the actual image, hinting that the video itself may be the fake. This whole thing is starting to hurt my head. How about you compare them yourselves and make your own judgement -- and then we'll wait to see what Apple actually announces, making all of this speculation pointless anyway.

The errors are probably because the guy made the video afterwards, after he saw all the hubub about it. Probably explains the minor discrepancies with the video and the image.

the video does prove that it -could- be a fake pic. we all know that. but it's clearly not the making of the actual picture we see.
he does a good job, but i think he goes a little out of his way to make it more complicated that it needed to be though. why not upload photos into the ipod of each half of the test screen? then you'd only have to bridge the middle section? and why not stick an -actual- sticker on it to avoid any photoshop residue? i also think it's unlikely that in creating a fake, someone would think to include an arbitrary detail like 'this side up' written on a piece of tape in chinese - and that you'd begin the process of fakery by translation-searching these words.
just a theory. fake video or not, it makes its point quite well, and is a nice little piece of filmmaking.

I think you are all failing to see the point of the video:
even though this is clearly not a documentation of the actual making of the original image (the video shows the image on various sites before he even starts working), what is has done is demonstrated the ease with which the image could be made.
I don't think this video purports to be a documentation of the production of the actual image, but rather a replication of the process probably undertook by whoever made the original image. This video makes the image seem less real.
that said, why is there such poor information on all of this? information just seems to surface out of thing air, and it's always fragmented. how did a video just come from no where? who made this video, and why hasn't anyone e-mailed them for a comment? seems like an easy way to clear things up.
Continued interest in this story is REDICULOUS. I mean seriously.
February 27 2006 at 1:14 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is going to be one of those things like the JFK shooting... there will always be proof from both sides, but no one will know for sure who is right. I mean, a touch screen iPod will almost inevitibly be released eventualy and when it does people will be asking wether this was a prototype or a good photoshop. No one knows... yet.

February 27 2006 at 12:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am impressed LD. I would have thought it very difficult to get so much wrong in one comment. But you have set some records in that last one.
I could spend all night pointing out the inconsistencies in your remarks, not to mention your gross misunderstanding of "what a blog is", and it's role in disseminating information, but why bother? I am almost certain it will fall on deaf ears.
When it comes to a blog I think it is just best for us to agree to disagree.
As I said in my very first comment to you, I don't believe TUAW is the proper place for you to gather your Mac news and information. If "your point" is to get me to call on TUAW to change the way in which they report on the Mac happenings around the web I am sorry to disappoint you, as I will not be doing so. As I mentioned before I think the bloggers here at TUAW do an excellent job, and I hope their work continues, even in the face of detractors such as yourself. Their large community of readers leads me to believe it will, and as Martha says "it's a good thing."
I would also suggest you examine the timeline of events surrounding this picture, as I believe you have the "debunking" of the original picture occurring a little quicker in your chain of events than what actually occurred.
It's only a guess but I am pretty sure you have the picture in question confused with the second "leaked" photo to appear on the web that was put forth as a good natured attempt to recreate the photo which had been released a day earlier. That was clearly a fake, and admitted to being so by the pictures creator. This video, and this post by TUAW, is not addressing that photo. There are plenty of resources on the web to connect the dots and I am sure you will do so.
All of this info is out there for you to grab, but for your sake I think you would be happier grabbing it elsewhere as TUAW clearly does not uphold the same journalistic integrity you would like to see in a reliable "commercial blog".
Again let me assure you, I understand your point, but I do not agree with it, and it would be my guess that along with Dan Lovejoy above, and countless other frequent visitors to the site, there are many who feel the same as I. As I am sure there are more than a few that agree with you. That's the thing, you can never make everyone happy, you just have to try to do your best.
That being said I hope you find a blog that suits you and as a fellow Mac user I wish you all the best.
But it is late here in NY so I will have to leave this conversation for another day. Good luck to you.

It's interesting that people focus on me when I wasn't even the one making the original comments that sparked this discussion. Do you just not like opposing viewpoints?
February 26 2006 at 11:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLD, For the sake of everyone here please just go away and get your news elsewhere. Failing that just please be quiet and don't comment.
Thanks in advance.
