Apple Announces New Intel-based Mac Minis
Well, it's
not quite the Apple Media Center that I've been wishing for, but it's close. At today's special Apple Event, the
company announced two updated models of their Mac mini.1.5GHz Intel Core Single
1.5GHz Intel Core Solo processor
2MB L2 Cache
667MHz Frontside Bus
512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
60GB Serial ATA hard drive
Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Price: Starts at $599.00
1.67 GHz Intel Core Dual
1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
2MB L2 Cache
667MHz Frontside Bus
512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
80GB Serial ATA hard drive
Double-layer SuperDrive (DVD R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Price: Starts at $799.00
Both models come with built-in Airport Extreme, Bluetooth, and integrated Intel GMA950 graphics processor with 64MB of shared DDR2 SDRAM. Each mini also has a Gigabit Ethernet port, four external USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 400 port, optical digital and analog audio in/out, and built-in mono speaker. Each machine also ships with new Front Row software that uses Bonjour technology to locate shared music, photo, and movies databases on your home network. This means you can store your data on any computer in the house and play it on the mini which can be connected to a standard computer monitor, or to your television.

I don't know what's the fuss about Integrated Graphics. I don't think the earlier Mini had anything spectacular. This is their entry level machine and I don't think it is meant for gaming.
In fact its a great update. Look at the processor upgrade, RAM, among other things.
I'm not at all saying that the Apple event was not a dissapointment, but there shouldn't be anything to complain about the mini...
That was supposed to say:
MHz != MHz. 1 G4 MHz != 1 Core Solo MHz
But I used greater-than and less-than symbols and it got caught lost in the HTML.
>35. WTF? In Australia, the entry-level model is selling for $999aud. In the US, that same model is $599usd.
>A quick visit to a currency coverter website reveals that $599usd = $807aud - so Australia is paying $192 more?
You can't just multiply by the currency conversion rate - you have to factor in GST (10%), duties, etc. There is also some buffer space added to the price to accommodate fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
> The single core, in essence, has no bump-up in speed, especially since most 1.42 PPC Minis came
>out as 1.5s in later production runs.
Once again, and Mac users have been saying this to their PC... "friends" for years, MHz MHz. 1 G4 MHz 1 Core Solo MHz. You can't say that the 1.5GHz G4 is the same as a 1.5GHz Core Solo. They're different architectures.
It's like comparing car performance based on the capacity of the engine. This one is a 2.0l, so it beats this 1.8l. No. Go put a 2.0l Corolla up against the 1.3l Renesis Mazda RX-8.
I think people are blowing this integrated graphics thing out of proportion. The Radeon 9200 was no speed demon and the GMA950 should improve video playback quite a bit. The Mac Mini never was a good choice for gamers.

I only watch video, I also use iPhoto, and Photoshop. Will it actually be as incredibly slow as everyone says it will? I bought a G4 mini about a week ago, and would like to update to a faster computer because I think this one is underpowered. I would likely get the duo core. Any thoughts?
I had doubts about Apple turning the mini into a media center. They have to much style to cannibalize another product for that. They'd create something new and unique.

I'm with you post #20, I'm sauper glad my Intel iMac kicks but over the mac mini. I just did a software update and it didn't find anything. So i'm wondering if this new front row is only gonna be on the new mac's. seems pretty crappy if it is. Why wouldn't apple release an uupdate for all the new intel macs with this new version of bonjour. Doesn't make sense to me.

1. ram: 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB $300
2. hard drive: 120GB Serial ATA drive $125
As a switcher, I'm still less than a year into a Mac.
Here is what I don't understand about this whole media center thing. How the hell am I supposed to get HD into this thing? God I hate my Motorola HD-DVR, but until Apple has an out of the box solution for recording and playing HD, it's not going to replace my piect of crap Motorola box.
Do my kids love it for iTunes, surfing the net and school projects? Sure.
And I love iPhoto.
I'm never buying a pc again, but a media center? Um, no, not close.
And a $350 set of speakers? Nah, my Onkyo rig plays iTunes so I'm good there, and it does a bunch of other neat things.
So, how do I record an HD show on my mac mini without breaking out a toolbox?
I am recording about 10-12 hours a week of HDTV content with an EyeTV 500 on my PowerMac G5. I have converted about 75 of my favroite DVDs to mpeg which are stored on my PowerMac as well as all my music, photos, and bit-torrent video, itunes videos, etc.
If I can sit this thing under my HDTV and watch all that stuff (including the HDTV stuff), I think it is a winner, for me at least...
Put the iPod HiFi right next to it and run the sound output from the mini into the Aux output on the HiFi...or play off the iPod...hmmm
