Apple's special event a bit of a letdown
I rushed to TUAW's special event headquarters
(actually my spare room) to participate in our chatcast during Apple's special event this morning. My blood was
pumping; my fingers were poised at the keyboard; I was psyched for something really exciting. . . . And then came the
letdown. Sure it's nice to see the Mac mini go Intel, but if I'm going to splurge on any of the Intel Macs it's more likely to be on a MacBook Pro given my peripatetic lifestyle. The iPod Hi-Fi is a bit of a surprise, but I have to agree with C.K. that the concept is just so '80's. More importantly, the Hi-Fi's price point is too steep for my pocketbook. I'd rather save my $349 bucks toward that MacBook Pro. When Steve first mentioned the leather cases for the iPod with video I was psyched, but for $99 I'd expect to be able to view the screen and access the controls -- neither of which is possible with these cases.
So I'm going home empty-handed and will remain that way until the next big Apple announcement. I may be disappointed now, but I know the letdown is only temporary. I'm sure I'll be the first one in line for the next Apple special event. That is, unless you're there first.

#38 thank you, i thought noone would say anything about it... (your reply to #2)
#40 agreed. nothing compares to the mac mini with respect to look.
why can't people stop moaning about the price increase? there was no price increase, they just removed the wireless model from the line, oh, and added a remote, digital out, and hd quality video. oh, and its 3 times faster.
*sigh* people, get a life.
where in the hell is a wireless mighty mouse?!

The "blogosphere" hyped it up, parsed the message over and over, posted faked shots of fictional products, held mockup contests, turned it into a fricking carnival. There's no way Apple could have lived up to that nonsense. And now everyone is saying "but.. but wait until April 1st!" Will you ever learn? I guess Apple will disappoint you again when they don't even have a keynote!
#36, that was true of the old minis and the iMac G5s. Hell, that's half the reason I am typing this from an iMac G5 instead of a mini.
And DAMN you people are vindictive. Yes, the mini's up $100, but it does do a lot more. Generally, to be frank, I expect a better product to cost more than a worse one, and by very definition the FASTER Intel Mac mini is better, I would think.
As for the Hi-Fi...okay, you've got me, I do think it's ugly. Why does it have to be all black in front? I think it'd look better white. And if it produces as good sound as they say, well, good for them, and let's hope they revamp the design of it soon.
But you all are way too vindictive. At worst this is a minor event to unveil some "fun products." When I hear that I hear it in a nice, friendly way. Not "FUN PRODUCTS" but just "You know, we've got some nice, fun products for you kids to play with." At best, this was a small event where Apple introduced some neat stuff. I'd go for a Mac mini media center, if I could afford it (I couldn't afford even the old mini right now). It'd be fun to be able to access and play all my movies on my TV, as it's not that easy to do now. But honestly, kids, lighten the hell up. There are bigger things in life.
TGH
Stop listening to rumors.
Apple never pre-announced anything, everybody got hyped up and overexcited about all sorts of fakes and rumors, and now people are complaining that Apple didn't announce or release any of the things they never said they were going to announce or release in the first place.
You have only yourself to blame for the letdown.
Jake, Apple won't include PVR or TV tuner features. They have a store to buy TV shows, Apple wouldn't release a computer that record TV so you don't have to buy it.
Seriously, the future of TV is on-demand content, not scheduled shows.
I think a great addition to this Mac mini is for the IR to power-up/power-down the actual cpu. If apple really wants us to start using these on our HDTV's or whatever display for a "media center" experience, I think that option is necessary. So what if the remote gets a little bigger, maybe we won't be so apt to lose it? I like the idea of Bluetooth speakers, and hopefully the Hi-Fi is the first step in this direction, cause man, I'm not paying $349 for JUST that thing.
bring it on April 1st!
I thought this would be a huge event. May be the bigger event will be their anniversary or something?
But the new Mac Mini is a minor upgrade. Not the new features that were speculated about. No "Tivo-Killer" or TV- Tuner.
Apple still has room to improve
remember that Apple didn't make this a big event. they just wanted a few fun products to be shown. Hopefully a bigger event comes soon.

"As if Apple is going to make a major product announcement in a dinky little theatre on campus."
You mean, like the iPod that was released at the same place? Even though you were off on that, i agree with the rest of your comment. I can't wait for April either.
As for the Mac Mini. It's a good upgrade. georgep, it doesnt' conflict with the iMac's sales. The Mini only approaches the price of the iMac if you max it outand add a ACD. The Mini is meant for switchers who already have a keyboard, mouse and display.
People are too cheap. If you want a cheap PC buy an ugly Dell. I'm sticking with Apple.
