Memory lane: initial reactions to the iPod
'
I’d call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time…and it’s not really
functional.'Is that quote talking about the iPod Hi-Fi perhaps? Nope, someone wrote that about the original 5 gig iPod which Apple introduced sometime during the Mesozoic Era. Jason Fried has posted some choice quotes culled from a MacRumors forum posted right after Apple introed the iPod.
It puts things in perspective, huh?

pffft...you guys are just upset that you weren't possessed by the same fit of revolutionary genius which made me spend $500 on a walkman. no music store, no album art, i don't know how i survived.

The clickwheel was cool and it fit nicely in my pocket when I was on the motorcycle. It even went over a cliff with me 20 ft down into a creekbed and kept playing. I had to turn it off before the EMT's arrived. The best part was that it was fine for a few years afterwards. I only recently moved to the 4th gen when the screen died. It still works as a drive. I'd call that getting it right.
And how could anyone not love the Cube? Coolest tissue dispenser *ever*.
#11, I'm right there with ya!
I'm listening to my 1st Gen 5gig iPod right now, and I've been using it 4 or 5 times a week for for 4+ years now...since November of 2001.
The people who panned the original iPod, did so because they didnt understand the concept. I certainly didnt even though it was right up my alley. I received a 2nd gen 10GB as a gift and it changed my life. Now I use a 60GB 5th gen with the 140GB of music on my Mac. I still have ~1000 CDs but they are so rarely touched that they should just be boxed and stored as backups. By the way, when are those TB drives coming out?
As for them not getting it right on the 1st gen. I disagree. Other than software features, the only difference between the models is the location of the navigation buttons. They screwed up on the 3rd gen when the moved them away from the wheel. Integrating them into the wheel, well that was just genius.
I never hear anybody giving praises to the 2G iPod. It's the best of all worlds to me. Buttons I know I'm pushing and a no mechanical scroll wheel to wear out/break. I still use mine every day although the battery is completely shot. But I just leave it plugged into my car charger anyway. So how 'bout some love for the 2G?

The mechanical scroll wheel has excellent tactile feel and the buttons bordering the wheel act list guard rails so its super easy to scroll thru thousands of songs.

Yes, the iPod has gotten better, but the 1G iPod was the very best MP3 player availableby a wide margin. It was the first player that was both small AND high capacity, which still ranks as the most important innovation in this market. I owned a Nomad Jukebox at the time, so I immediately saw what was so great about the iPod. It was much smaller and had a better interface, Firewire, and a rechargeable battery. The sales growth is clouding people's memory, because the 1G iPod was also very successful. Even being available only to Mac users (or Windows users using XPod or other software), it captured a major portion of the market virtually from the beginning.

People panned the original iPod because it wasn't very good.
And It got better in later versions, because Apple finally got it right - better software support - becoming a great product.
People are panning the iHiFi, because it isn't very good.
So, until apple gets the HiFi RIGHT, it's not worth paying attention to.
Hence, saying the first HiFi is good, only because the iPod eventually became a good product is ludicrous.
That's the whole friggin' point. (>_
eh, I remember I had a jukebox when those came out...it was a smaller player true...but it felt like crap honestly....they have it more right now though.
I also remember having friends that had to send them back several times...then they later upgraded to later versions and dont complain as much.
goodtimes now though...
I'll always remember this from slashdot:
Posted by CmdrTaco on Tue Oct 23, '01 01:20 PM.....No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.
I did take a while, and a few revisions, some software updates, a music store, but they eventually got it right.
