New Flash Player Closes Security Vulnerability
Adobe/Macromedia has released a new version (8.0.24.0) of their Flash Player for Mac OS X and Windows that closes a
security vulnerability found in
earlier versions. It is available from the Player Download
Center. You can find out what version of Flash player you have installed by visiting this Flash page. This is also useful for checking to make sure the most recent version installed successfully.
Adobe/Macromedia also updated the Breeze collaboration plug-in to version 5.1 and their Shockwave Player to version 10.1.1.016.
Important Note: This update is for only PPC Macs and seems to break the preview-version of Flash Player that ships with the Intel Macs. So, if you have an Intel Mac, do not install this!]

anyone know if this is a universal binary version? if you have an intel mac and you update to a PPC version of Flash, you'll end up going insane (or so my doctor told me... wibble...) ;)

Al: according to some posts on Macupdate.com, this is not a Universal Binary and will only work under Rosetta. Actually if you install it on your Intel Mac it will break the currently working Flash Player in your Safari forcing you to launch Safari in Rosetta.

So Intel Mac users stay away from this still!

If you've installed this PPC Flash version on your Intel Mac, you can use Pacifist to extract the Internet Plugins installer from the Installer/Restore DVD(s) that shipped with your computer. This will reinstall the Intel version of the Flash player.

OUCH! That's the last time I'll jump quickly to install an update on my iMac before reading the whole blog entry to find out it's not Universal :(
Thanks for the tip Damien.

Installed and is working fine. I have no idea why other people are having problems. Firefox, comeon! Stay with apple. If you want a better browser use safari with saft.

Well so much for the flash player on my MacBook...
I can't grab my CD until later tonight, is there any way to fix this without them?

Yeah, anyone want to send me the original package? I don't have my install discs with me and won't have them until Saturday... Blah, I hate it when I only read the article's title and then compulsively click the links ;)

I haven't found anything close to "Internet Plugins" on either of the DVDs. Still looking, though.

Ok, here's what you do to get your Intel Flash player plugin back:
1) Download Pacifist from Macupdate.com.
2) Put the first Installer/Restore DVD into your optical drive.
3) Launch Pacifist. Consider paying Charles for his excellent software.
4) Use Pacifist to navigate to the Essentials.pkg and view the contents of the package. You'll see the standard OS X folder structure.
5) Arrow open the /Libary/Internet Plugins folder.
6) You'll see in there the Flash Player.plugin "folder". Remember that in OS X many programs are actually bundled folders of data.
7) Choose to extract the Flash Player.plugin to your desktop. You might optionally choose to install it from here, but I like extracting first.
8) Now move the wrong PPC version of the Flash Player.plugin you installed out of /Library/Internet Plugins. And move the newly-extracted one into this folder.
9) Restart any browsers you have running. You might also restart your computer or at least logout/back in. I'm not entirely sure when the Internet plugins load (though I suspect it's at browser launch, not login).
Note: I have not tested this. I'd be interested in knowing if it works. I don't believe Flash Player installer installs anything other than this plugin, so replace it above, as described, should work.

Macromedia... sorry Adobe... have just released an update to the intel version.

Apparently you still have to run Safari in Rosetta mode for it to work though. Works fine with Firefox :)

You know it's funny. I remember when Adobe actually gave too monkeys about the Mac community. Shame on them. *shakes his head in disgust*

Hi,
You can run the Flash Player preview natively -- it works but remember it is pre-release software. You only need to run Safari in Rosetta if you encounter problems with your general internet surfing or you want to use Breeze Presenter.
Please read the provided FAQ for more information about Flash Player support for Intel-based Macs.
